Ok, so, I had no issues running Renewal in 8, 8.1, and still none in 10.  However, Classic kept giving me ye olde "cannot init d3d..." error.

My drivers were up to date, fresh and new.  The grf was certainly not corrupted (crc reads fine).  My antivirus was definitely not in conflict, as turning it on or off provided nothing.  Running dxdiag.exe provided no answers, as all necessary functions are running.

Switching to various forms of video drivers in the setup_classic.exe offered no solutions either.

Switching to various compatability modes offered nothing, and even running as Administrator offered nothing...until:

I decided to change the compatability mode of Setup_Classic.exe to Windows XP (Service Pack 2).  Bam, I could then choose, as admin or no admin, the screen resolution.

I then changed both the ClassicRO.exe and clragexe.exe to compatability mode, Windows XP (Service Pack 2).

Now it runs.  Hope this helps anyone else who might have any issues.

Note: I have not yet tested windowed mode, but full screen works just fine.
