Well I guess I will try to explain refining in this game.

Note: Only covering up to +9 here, if you wanna go higher I suppose I can share. Also this is for Renewal not Classic.

So first we need to know a few things. Is it a weapon or armor? If it is a weapon, we need to know what level the weapon is. If it is an armor, you are all set.

The two big refining items are Oridecon and Elunium. You can buy them from other players or hunt them yourself.

If it is a different level, you need either Phracon for level 1 weapon or Emveretarcon for a level 2 weapon.

I would recommend going to the 2nd floor in Eden to refine. All the NPCs you need are in one place. There are other places w/ the NPCs, but having them all together near a storage is nice.

So get your gear and your refining ores and head on over there.

Now we need to talk about safe limits.

Weapons:

Weapon Lv. 1 - Safety Level +7
Weapon Lv. 2 - Safety Level +6
Weapon Lv. 3 - Safety Level +5
Weapon Lv. 4 - Safety Level +4

All Armor - +4

That means you can refine up to that + without the gear breaking. If you go higher the chance of it breaking increases.

To get your gear to the safe limit, use Normalson, in the top left of floor 2 in Eden. It costs zeny and one Ori/Elu depending on the gear.

Refining after the safe limit is where you start running the risk of breaking your gear.

Now at the safe limit you have 2 ways of proceeding. The first is Enriched Ores. These are cash shop items or buy them from other players. These ores alone will break the gear if they fail, but they have a better success rate then regular Ori/Elu.

The other way is to use items called Safe to 7 Certificates.

These items can only be obtained through the cash shop, or other players. The price fluctuates, so check the market.

So once you have your gear at the safe limit and it is below +7, you need an Ori/Elu and one Safe to Cert of whatever the gear is. (Armor,Headgear,Weapon)

You then wanna head to Mighty Hammer near the top right corner of Eden. He will then attempt to refine the weapon.

If it fails when using a safe to 7 cert, the gear is not destroyed when it fails. How many certs you need is RNG.

So you keep refining until +7.

Then you have 2 ways to get to +9.

Method 1 is HD Ores. HD Ori/Elu are used to refine gears to +7 - +9. HD Ores are cash shop items or buy from other players.

It costs money and the HD stones to refine. The chances of you getting to +9 are not good, so this method is not recommended. Usually 400 HD ores for a +9 from my experience. When you start refining at +7, if you leave the dialogue box, the weapon will stop being refined, and you will have to get it back to +7 or higher to start refining again.

Method 2 is called Enriched Hammer. Mighty hammer is an event that the GMs put in. IT IS NOT PERMANENT so refine when the event is in if you plan to do it this way. He refines with Enriched Ores. It functions the same as Mighty Hammer, but it uses the better Ores, AKA a better chance to +9.

Or you can make a blacksmith and use the upgrade weapon skill. A max level Mastersmith upgrades with rates that are only 10% better then the NPCs and can only refine with regular ores. No HD or Enriched.

What a wall of text huh? Hope this cleared it up. Feel free to ask questions.

even if you had a blacksmith character the only things you could ever upgrade on your own are weapons. and even then, there a few other things to keep in mind:

1) needs to be mastersmith (transcendent blacksmith)
2) can only use regular ores (no hd or enriched)
3) shadow weapons are considered armors and cannot be upgraded this way
4) your mastersmith should be job 70 for maximum success rate

you cannot use hd ores until you get to +7. however, as long as you remain in the dialogue box you can keep using hd/enriched ores even if you fall below +7. but if you exit the upgrading dialogue and your item is below +7 you will need to get it back to +7 before using hd ores again.

also you should use enriched ores for better % chance since enriched hammer is in right now (2f eden).

use safe to +7 certs. if the armor/weapon isn't worth that much though, safe certs are not worth using.

use ragial.com to check prices.

Wait for them to be in a lucky box in the cash shop.

Buy from another player.

you can get +7 certs on your own by using eat gear npc in eden 1st floor. just get a non-npc bought piece of equipment to +7 or above and trade it in. you must be able to wear said piece of equipment.
