Hi guys - I literally wasted all the zenny I had today trying to increase the Aspd of my shadow chaser (for auto shadow spell)

The first thing I did was buy 2x bradium brooch's for 40mil (20ea). Each one said +2% aspd. I saw my 173 aspd and presumed that i would then get +3.46 aspd for each brooch. However, this turned out to be stupid for two reasons:

1) I forgot that when I was last playing I had grinded and grinded and got myself an advanced flame lord set (a.ror and a.rofl) so i didnt have accessory slots free anyway..

2) I tried the bradium brooches and they did NOT improve my aspd -at all- over what i was getting from the a.fl set. One brooch took me to same aspd as the set, 2nd brooch didnt give enough aspd to raise it any higher.

the 2nd thing I did was get temporal agi boots, "+3% aspd per 3 refine levels" ok! this is plain english, 3% aspd bonus for every 3 refine levels. There is SURELY no other way to read that sentence? I stuck with the flame lord set as brooches were not improving aspd, i equiped my new boots and made +4.

No change. Not a single freaking point of aspd. I'm clearly not understanding this % nonsense but its frustrating because the item descriptions seem very simple. I decided I would go for +6 boots and see if 6% aspd would help... they broke upgrading. Well duh, this is ro - if you havnt rage quit once today you arnt playing right.

So now I'm sat here staring at desktop after my alt+f4 rage quit and wondering, ok, bad luck is one thing - but clearly there is more than that. Either these items are broke or the descriptions are naff and when it says +3% aspd bonus it means something other than... plus three percent. Cuz even if you take your classes base aspd, which is like 146 or something with no modifiers? 3% of 146 is 4.38.

It has been explained on the forum multiple times, the wiki article explains how it works, and the wiki database for items has a more clear description of what they do. You can also plug these items into http://calc.irowiki.org to see what they do (http://calc.irowiki.org/newcalc/ if you want to do everything manually from the equip enchant area, in the event of items the other calc doesn't have).

Here's a post I made on the topic in February, edited slightly by me today.

The item is not overly misleading, you attack faster. Its a decrease in the delay of your attacks by 10%, not a 10% increase in the number in the window. If it were the way it was written, +100% aspd would be double attacks (like if you attacked one/sec, you'd jump to 2/sec), not 100% reducting in delay, or max attacks (7) per second (a jump from 1/sec to 7/sec !). Its actually better the way it is now.

If you have 500 millisecond delay between attacks (2 attacks a second), a 10% aspd gear will knock off 50 milliseconds of delay, making you swing every 450 ms instead, so you have your 10% faster.

Okay fair enough - but explaining on the forums and wiki is not immediately useful to someone who's immersed in game and "just playing" because we're just looking at things and making assumptions based off the english :/ now double checking i see it does even say on temporal agi boots desc, in brackets, attack delay 3% decrease - but I didnt think much of it because I assumed it was just explaining what ASPD was for new players :/  Aspd is a set thing with a set value, its displayed right on your main stats window. That is going to be what people think of if you write aspd and thus 3% aspd is going to be 3% of that number. It would be clearer if it didnt mention aspd -at all- and just said "reduces after-attack delay" because that will stop the connection being made :(

I'm not a new player by any stretch of the imagination and I still fell into this hole - if its been talked on the forums as many times as you say then its clearly still a recurring problem and needs further addressing. If it wasnt, these posts wouldnt still be appearing! (ps: sticky an explanation? I did check top posts to see if common issue first, but thats where my research ended because I had -already- made the mistake when I came here and I was here to rage not research :P)

In your case of 173 aspd, your delay is (200 - 173) * 20. This is the max aspd (200) minus your current aspd (173) times 20 milliseconds per point of aspd you still need to reach the max. You have 27 delay, which is 540 milliseconds between attacks.

An item that reduces that delay by 3% would reduce it to 524 milliseconds.  (524 delay divided by 20 milliseconds = 26.2 points of delay still)

Max aspd of 200 minus your 26.2 delay = 173.8 aspd

You're almost at 174, but the window truncates the decimal. Sorry ! It'll still show 173.

The good accessory is Bakanowa Agimat Tattoo (+10%) and to try and get those boots to +22% aspd  (enchant with coagulated spell to +10% aspd, and refine the boots to +12 for +12% more). In this case, the +32% aspd would be VERY noticeable. It'd pop you up to something like 181 Aspd.

Well, it doesn't need further addressing because the formula behind the aspd calculation is already pretty clearly known. The explanation is already posted in irowiki for the public to see.

So if you're not a new player, you really should have checked the irowiki for further details.

And today I've learned a new lession about attack speed. Never felt the need of checking the formula before.

^Learned something new too . I always had something like "if it's not enough , go buy some more" in terms of stacking any aspect like atkspd. :heh:

^ that's not really far off. The more you stack +aspd gear the more potent it gets.
