In the Ai is there away to have them assist a party member with healing or kills?

Yes. If you're using AzzyAI, you have to add them to your friend list and toggle the assist. It has been a while, so I may not be recalling the specifics correctly, but the instructions explain it clearly.

You may also go to the [ Homunculsu Tactics ] tab (assuming you are using AzzyAI), move to the setting Rescue and configure it to [ All of the above ].
You can also set your KS setting to [ Always ], because homus only atk if your party member is under atk, so mind where you park your homunculus in order to avoid ksing other players.
