This map is where I level my character.

The above just doesn't sound right. Even the definition of the verb level isn't appropriate to the above statement.

verb
verb: level; 3rd person present: levels; past tense: levelled; past participle: levelled; gerund or present participle: levelling; past tense: leveled; past participle: leveled; gerund or present participle: leveling
  1. 1.
give a flat and even surface to.
"contractors started leveling the ground for the new power station"
synonyms: make level, level out/off, make even, even out, make flat, flatten, smooth, smooth out, make uniform
"tilt the pan to level the mixture"
    • Surveying
ascertain differences in the height of (land).
    • demolish (a building or town).
"bulldozers are now waiting to level their home"
synonyms: raze, demolish, flatten, topple, destroy; More
tear down, knock down, pull down, bulldoze
      "bulldozers leveled the building"
  2. 2.
begin to fly horizontally after climbing or diving.

This map is where I train my characters.

Now that sounds better, but I seldom see people using this in online games.

This map is where I level up my character.

Sounds weird and incorrect, unless I'm mistaken!

And yea, I guess I'm bored. I've been on and off RO recently but I've been staying up-to-date as much as I can. :P

noun

7.
a device used for determining or adjusting something to a horizontalsurface.
8.
Surveying.
  1. Also called surveyor's levelan instrument for observing levels, having a sighting device, usually telescopic, and capable of beingmade precisely horizontal.
  2. an observation made with this instrument.
  3. spirit level.
9.
an imaginary line or surface everywhere at right angles to the plumbline.
10.
the horizontal line or plane in which anything is situated, with regard toits elevation.
11.
a horizontal position or condition.
12.
an extent of land approximately horizontal and unbroken byirregularities.
13.
a level or flat surface.

Pay attention to the definitions 10 and 11. An horizontal line or plane in which something is situated.

In many cultures and figures of speech, one's body is refered as a temple, a structure, something that can be constructed and elevated. When you "level" for a construction, you even and flatten the area. In a similar way, you can "level" the height in your "temple" by gainig strenght, speed or wisdom. And as definition number 13 suggest, you cut all imperfections in your current height and leave a clean and flat surface. What once rugged, is now ready to put something on it. You've grown, you've "leveled" up.

You see, it's not incorrect usage, it's a metaphor for one's body/soul/mind.  :p_smile:

Ohh. Okay, I was kinda looking at that definition a while ago thinking that it may fit in with the usage. Makes sense. :heh:

That should stop my cringing. And from now on I can confidently use level as such. Yay

I think you're reading too far in, Aku. xP

Think of stairs. A step is literally a level. A flat even surface at a given horizontal position (height). What happens when you go up stairs? You climb levels. Literally. RPG Levels use this ascent as a metaphor for becoming stronger. You ascend up levels. In this case, benchmarks of your development are represented by each level.

As such, its common in English to use words like this. GOing up an 'ascent' is 'ascending'. Going up a 'climb' is 'climbing'. So going up a level is 'leveling'. Whether it is literary or not people will colloquially make up words that follow the pattern they know. Ask a child what the plural of cactus is and they'll probably say "cactuses" not the literary answer, "cactii".

It multiposted because I pressed send and there was zero response on my phone not even a page reloading bar. And I kept pressing or clicking off and back on thinking it wasnt registering the touch right. When I refreshed it somehow many posted despite the forum supposed to be blocking second++ posts after the first for like 39 seconds.

Someone explained that that's the time when the web crawlers would go to the forums and eventually cause a massive lag. It happens every 1:15AM/PM to 1:30AM/PM ET.

would you cringe if you heard me say "i am storaging"? cause sometimes i am taking stuff out, or putting stuff in, or restocking my supplies, or checking to see which etc items i can NPC to free up a slot or 2, or all of the above. it takes too long to type all that out.

"I am storing" is grammatically correct and uses less characters.

Or you could just simply say "Storage" instead of coming up with a full statement.

i usually just say "storaging" if someone's bugging me while i'm busy in storage. like how i would say "eating" as opposed to "food"

I appreciate slang like "leveling" and "storaging" because they aren't just verbs; they're stated goals. If you say training you could be training your proficiency at the class. The goal of the training is unstated. But "leveling" has a stated goal of attaining level advancement through that training.

Ermm... I didn't even know that was a thing. Never used that. :heh: I'd say "I'm still using the storage" or "Still at the storage" or shorter, "Using storage..." So yes. I cringe. D:

Yes. Pokemon justifies everything. Let us train our characters and make them evolve into 3rd jobs! :p_idea:
