With 2D animation largely dead in the west thanks to the advent of 3D animation, share your fond memories (or nightmares) of 2D animation whether in film or television. (Please link to YouTube videos rather than embed them in your post out of consideration for people with slow connections.)

Would prefer to share non-anime stuff so anime fans please refer to this thread. -->https://forums.warpp...favorite-anime/

Gonna start things off with this gem from the 90s.

Once upon a gorgeous December.

Adored the old Batman show and frickin' Gargoyles. Also, the fastest thing alive.

Dude, when they got rid of Teen Titans in favor of Teen Titans GO, that was just, UGH. Never was able to catch much of Justice League, but when I did, it was good.

Actually enjoyed Puffy Ami Yumi. Never really got into Codename: Kids Next Door, but my friends who did would say nothing but good things about it.

Jem, it looked like Barbie and that was offputting for me. I dunno, maybe I should've given it a try. I liked the old My Little Pony since Disney's Fantasia got me into centaurs (weird, I know).

Didn't know Wally had his own TV series. Thought it was just the books.

Man, Disney hasn't made much movies in that vein since they dropped 2D animation.

I still hate that it explains what you are watching, but cut those bits out and it is fun :)

Favorite Disney 2D films is a tie between Mulan and Hercules. I love how they each had their own unique art style to them instead of using the same art style over and over again. Also Tarzan because Phil Collins.

Highly recommend Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron if you're interested in a story that doesn't revolve around talking animals.

Fantasia is awesome (still have my VHS and managed to hunt down the soundtrack). Fantasia 2000 was okay, felt it could've been better in some parts.

I think Treasure Planet and Titan AE really scared the industry out of pursuing the medium :(

Oh man, someone else remembers Johnny Quest, that was some good stuff. I tried to watch Johnny Test and it didn't work for me. Phineas & Ferb never clicked for me, but that might be because I liked Dexter's Laboratory and Power Puff Girls more.

Would've liked to see what the original version of Emperor's New Groove (Kingdom of the Sun) was like, it sounded interesting.

Treasure Planet is so underrated. I think the downfall of 2D animation in general was the result of both crappy marketing and people thinking 3D animation is better (which it isn't, it's just a different style of animation).

That really vibrant and smooth 2D animation is just traced and cleaned 3D or rotoscope animation. Moreso the former nowadays. It's always going to be more expensive because of the additional processes involved. Japanimation is a dying industry for the same reason :/

Most of Disney's feature length animations from the 1940's through the Mid '90's were well done.
The adaptations of Watership Down and The Plague Dogs by Richard Adams.
René Laloux's La Planète Sauvage (Fantastic Planet) and Les Maîtres du Temps (Time Masters).
Ralph Bakshi's Lord of the Rings adaptation and Wizards.
The Last Unicorn.

But a digital method had already been established by the time Princess and the Frog came out. They used an animation program in addition to drawing on tablets to animate that film. Yeah, it's expensive at first since it's recent tech, but give it a few years and it'll be just as affordable as 3D animation.

It's a shame the industry would rather cheap out than be innovative. :\

I actually saw the old 1977 animation of The Hobbit and was surprised it was animated by the precursor to Studio Ghibli. The art reminded me of old Chinese paintings, which was very interesting to see animated.

The Last Unicorn was okay, felt there was more to the story than what was presented.

I really like traditional cel and stop motion animation as an art form. There is usually some aspect of western animation that is off-putting, whether it be crappy voice acting, thin plot, weak characters, or whatever. However, if there is a good technical execution, I can at least appreciate the craftsmanship it takes to be produced.

I guess, for campy Saturday morning nostalgia, there are these:

Captain N

Dungeons & Dragons

The Real Ghostbusters

Inhumanoids

Johnny Quest was definitely the cream of the crop for Hanna-Barbara cartoons.

Addendum:

The wife still has all her paraphernalia from these cluttering the house:

My Pet Monster

Pound Puppies

Rainbow Brite

Care Bears

Monchichis

Teddy Ruxpin

Adding some more stuff since I've been reliving my teens and early twenties on Youtube tonight.

  • Megas XLR
  • Xiaolin Showdown
  • Mucha Lucha
  • Jackie Chan Adventures (UNCLE!)
  • Static Shock
  • Duck. F**king. Dodgers.

So gud.

I always found it amusing how Jackie Chan isn't voiced by Jackie Chan. And yes, Uncle is awesome.

Static Shock is underrated, in my opinion.

A few indie animations that I've come across over the years:

Voodoo

TIE Fighter (Pretty amazing the poster animated that whole thing by himself.)
TIE Fighter (redubbed) (Soundtrack makes a big difference.)

Phosphoro

Pretty decent Flash animations:

Zelda: Heart for the Hero

Final Fantasy A+

OMG, a 2D feature film! Tout en Haut du Monde

Fish can be taxidermied and once they're dried, they can pretty much last forever.
