Oh what a great idea! I'll have to post my stuff after I get off work. But I saw someone mention oekaki. When I was younger, I used to participate in a public oekaki site. You can either draw and post it for others to see or go into a room and artists will gather and draw together in real time.
The times I drew there, we would do collaborations. Like, I'll draw my own thing, then someone would add to it, or draw next to it and connect it with my drawing.
Another thing I loved was when I used to go on this art forum, we'll have different, fun things to do to help give us a break from contests, commissions, etc. One was a thread where you cannot type, but instead, you draw your actions. You make your character and someone will quote you and interact! You can still write dialogue but it had to be in the pic.
Another one was a battle royale, which is the same as above, except everyone is battling. :V

we could probably do the ones with own characters then we could interact through drawings lol. XD (we did the battling once in Deviantart thru GTRO group. it was fun and challenging)

Honestly I was thinking that throughout high school when I actively wrote both fanfiction and original stuff.

EDIT: And now I'm stuck in this rut.

Line art and coloring are both equally tedious to me. But if I had to choose, I suppose lineart is slower since it requires a lot of cleaning up to look nice. Coloring can be pretty quick depending on the method used.

I'm trying to learn better ways of coloring with Shilin's "help." (I hope to be like her one day. *_* )

Lineart is faster, since I tend to use many colors then got confused at how to mix this and that. :heh:

This is why I hate painting. Why can't the eyedrop tool exist in real-life? The pigments keep changing and I always end up not mixing enough of it.

oh my i didn't know Shilin had a vid of her process <3

she's my inspiration for the RO artworks ever since i started in pRO @_@ thank you for this. i havent tried that process yet but it looks interesting.  starting on the desaturated colors..

ohhh. yeah coloring gets confusing at times. like when you're halfway done and you feeling like going back to scratch because they don't work too well altogether. @_@

http://t1sf.devianta...T-s-Ap-34791737

I've been a member since 2004. 2005-2008 were the golden years and then it started becoming a commercialized cesspool.

Some of the highlights of changes made since I started using the site include:
- Prints shop being changed from subscriber-only to free for all, which dramatically lowered the quality of Prints products seen.
- Thumbnail previews in inboxes went from being subscriber-only to free for all, giving less incentive to purchase subscriptions.
- Critique requests went from being a free feature to subscriber-only.
- LLAMAS, STUPID FRICKIN' LLAMAS.
- Lost the ability to search through thousands of art; this means if your art isn't one of the 1,000 that shows up for someone, your art is forever buried unless they come across that by luck. Fortunately, there's always Google, but it makes browsing through deviantART itself a PITA.
- Minimization of the front page; removing features from the menu bar in an effort to assert a minimalist design on the site ended up confusing users as they were given no idea how to find the site's features.
- Rampant art theft and tracing with little to no moderation on those and porn.
- ADS NEXT TO THE FRICKIN' ART.

Over the years, they kept removing subscriber features and replacing them with either nothing or features that used to be free. Subscribers had less and less reasons to renew since a lot of what they liked as a subscriber no longer was exclusive to them. Giving them the critiques features was a stupid move as the admins of the site pretty much said that only subscriber art is worth critiquing.

Used to be they use banner ads that graced the top of the site and didn't intrude into the art page itself. But then they started shoving the ads right next to the deviation so viewers had to deal with seeing obnoxious commercials while trying to get a better look at an artwork. Then they made things worse by adding the More Like This sidebar into the artwork page as well, so viewers were not only bombarded by ads while looking at an artwork, but they're also drawn away from your gallery to someone else's gallery. Art pages became another browsing page instead of a separate page where you can leave comments on the art.

The final straw for a lot of people was them treating journals the same as the art on the site. Honestly, I come to an art site to find art, not bloglists. The only good thing they've added since were the Groups system and Film, but they totally dropped the ball on the Film feature since people started using it as another YouTube. The cherry on top was when they changed deviantART's logo, which happened to be a rip-off of someone else's logo. They even wrote an essay and made a whole video to explain the change in detail. Honestly, why not just launch a new site if they're tired of the deviantART brand?

oh gosh it was a ripoff? D: yeah im finding it hard to navigate thru their site up til now :wah: and i used to make it at times in front page which used to be screenshot worthy but now I dont even know what serves as their home page lol. Honestly I've got drawcrowd... but i'm held back by my insecurities that its all supposed to be just digital art. But who knows, maybe i'll put more art there soon than DA. (or try Pixiv-- tho i suck at understanding Japanese) XD

i'm not sure on the other features you've mentioned cuz i havent tried it myself. though i got pissed off that time i was finally gonna try their premium membership, suddenly bam! no more. its core membership now. And people are like gtfo if you don't like these changes and keep on whining. ;-; thing is, its much expensive than the one i wanted to purchase :/ (i'm just gonna try this time for name change purposes). Also yeah it felt bad the changes especially to artworks detracts you from the artist's works but i'll see for myself if things change if i get the core membership.

i'm curious though... are there any other sites with huge communities like DA, pixiv, drawcrowd, artstation-- or even small at least but running long enough to post artworks to. ;-; because i'm downright clueless lol. im keeping my Behance clean for portfolio purposes and the other one i found was LINE community related.

I never go to da front page anymore, bookmarked the message center so I can check my inbox then go somewhere else.

>Ads beside the art
Adblock and Noscript is your friend. No trace of the ads.

For Pixiv, don't worry, the interface is 100% English now (it automatically set to English if you're not from Japan), popular tags can be searched in English too. Really, the only trouble with pixiv is just when you're following a smaller fandom and unpopular tags, but a little google-fu and kana knowledge helps alot. That and the community... Being mainly Japanese and all, but it doesn't mean you can't find any (there are a lot non-Japanese artists there).

A little tips for tag searching in pixiv.

I personally really like Pixiv's mult-image/comic feature, it save tons of time and hassle when you want to upload multi page comics or a drawing with different version but too lazy to submit multiple times or just don't want to flood your and your followers' inbox.

The community used to be amazing in the old days when deviantART was a smaller site. It really blossomed in the 2005-2008 era, but a lot of the changes implemented since then made the site less and less homey. I left when they decided to push ads into the deviation pages because that was just going too far. I tried to keep up on the changes until I finally just lost interest in the site altogether. It's such a mess now and the community has gotten so unfriendly.

Ever since I left, I've been trying to find a decent art site the settle in. There used to be an art site called MangaBullet that was really awesome. It hosted both art and comics so you could read comics that other people made in a format that was easier on the eyes than SmackJeeves. The community was really nice and had site-wide contests and art events that a lot of people took part in to make huge collaborations. Unfortunately, the creator shut the site down, which lead to a lot of controversy. You can read about it here and here.

I tried joining Artician, since it seemed to have a lot of potential, but unfortunately it looks like the creators there have abandoned the site. (It's still around, but the developer blog hasn't been updated in ages and spambots have taken over the site.) RedBubble seems to be doing well, so I might end up settling there.

Some art sites I'm keeping an eye on are PaintBerri and ArtStation. Just seems like whenever I come across an art site that looks like a good alternative to deviantART, something bad happens to it. :\

I never go to da front page anymore, bookmarked the message center so I can check my inbox then go somewhere else.

>Ads beside the art

Yes, but it's the principle of the thing. Just thinking that it would be a good idea to put ads next the artworks says a lot about the admins themselves and what they're more interested in. Also, not everyone is tech-saavy enough to know how to use adblockers. I have relatives that I used to show my deviantART page to but now I don't because I'm afraid of them getting viruses from the ads.

Not to mention there was that incident in which someone went around hacking deviantART accounts and deactivating them to prove that there were exploits on the site that the admins didn't care to patch up. There was a huge uproar over it because it disproved some claims that the deviantART staff made like how accounts can't be restored once they're deactivated (they restored several accounts during the incident) and that supposedly artworks posted on deactivated accounts get deleted when they actually don't.

:swt: Wow, after a month of proofreading and massive editing, the first arc is ready. It's more than 50,000 words though so I'm not sure what to do. I think I might make a new thread and post it…maybe.

Zero's meme still gives me nightmares.

Finally, screw dA. Tumblr or Livejournal is better. At least when you copyright it it's completely yours.

@ZeroTigress no wonder a lot of the artists i followed don't exist anymore on the site ;___;

i've started a Pixiv account but i'm still lost in the site, will tweak it when i have time. 8D

@Saralen- Tumblr is good. <3 though i guess it works best of you have a certain fandom? :v

anyone got new year resolutions for this year's art plans? :D may this podcast of Chris Oatley be your guide on making one.

also updated monthly contests on the first page :> please do join Akreis' event for Valentines day~
