Copying this over from Steam so it can be better seen and dealt with because, while i can't corroborate it since i don't use the Steam version, it's rather important if it is indeed an issue.

When to start it up, it traget WPLauncher.exe, and once you sign up, it will then traget launcher.exe, I think the problem is with WPlauncher.exe, not 100% sure on this.
It's rather odd that this is an issue. If it was just one poster, I would have dismissed it as a troll, but it seems to be affecting people to the point that htere's a steam guide to atach the non-Steam version to Steam just to work around the error.
