Soulcraft expand will never destroy an item.
Every time it fails, it will revert back to 1.0x, unless you apply insurance.
It's completely safe to do.

Glad for that first line but...

Should I have understood its system like Enchanting's, like...

I always thought the "1.x" number was a random number (like when Enchant Shifting but without any possible malus) that can't be reverted once obtained.
