I'm planning to try and get a vit(maybe?) or agi(most likely) sage for PvM and generally messing around.

Totally true. When you first cast your elemental floor buff you will get this icon on your right hand buff side of the screen, it looks like a magic circle revealed from some curtains:

While this status is in effect, any susequent casts of the big 3 elemental floor buffs will not incur a ygem cost until the buff dissipates. Do note that Magnetic Earth is not part of the big 3 and will still consume both b and y gems regardless whethwr this buff is up or not. Hope that answers the question.
