Preemptive tl;dr: Books are f'ing weird.
Well, this is something I've been wondering too. Let's look at the stats compared to its competing books!
STATS | C.Bible | Ledger | PrncpOM | Encyclo | ===========|===========|===========|===========|===========| wATK | 120~200 | 242~396 | 135~215 | 185-265 | wMATK | 75~155 | 205~359 | 235~315 | 175-255 | eATK | 225 | 0 | 0 | 0 | eMATK | 112 | 0 | 0 | 0 | STR | 0 | +3 | 0 | 0 | INT | 0 | +3 | +3 | +3 | DEX | 0 | 0 | 0 | +2 | LUK | 0 | -20 | 0 | 0 | CRIT | 0 | 0 | 0 | +20 | Notes | LvlBonus | Enchants | SageSet | MOAR CRIT | Notes | Elemental | +15% ASPD | 5% SP REC | Combo ASPD| Notes | W.Lvl 3 | W.Lvl 4 | W.Lvl 3 | W.Lvl 3 |
So, from what we can see here, it's a tossup in different areas. Crimson reigns supreme in total ATK, but loses in MATK to everything but the Encyclopedia. The Ledger closes the gap partly due to its higher base wATK on any build with STR combined with the larger refine bonus for being a Level 4 weapon. The Ledger also has a major ASPD bonus that only the Encyclopedia can match with a shield combo (that in turn cripples the ASPD right back down). Lastly, Ledger of Death has access to Malangdo Enchants which clearly push it to the top of the pile. The only situation in which the Ledger falls short is in a Critical build.
Principles of Magic is also pretty weak. The set bonus is terrible and eats up precious accessory slots, and the ATK is in the gutter. The only thing it can boast is the highest base MATK, but the Ledger overtakes it anyway at high refines. This seems to relegate it to a cheap throwaway weapon for levels 60 to 99.
The Encyclopedia sits in a weird spot. It comes in third place on ATK and last on MATK but is the only book suited for a critical build, which has other perks like low DEX requirements and small additional Flee/ATK/MATK. If a shield comes into play for survival purposes, the Revised Encyclopedia combo gives it even MORE bonus stats, additional DEF, shield card, and a 15% ASPD bonus to compensate for the ASPD penalty. Its card slots fight with Aunoe cards, though. Critical-Autocast builds might benefit more from Faithful Manager, while straight critical builds are probably better off with Aunoe...but I haven't run those numbers, so I have no idea. It's a very strange weapon.
I have to say, I'm pretty disappointed with the Crimson Bible. The two unique ATK bonuses add up to a massive bonus, but it falls short in every other area. Considering how important MATK is to both Battle Sage and Battle Priests, it's hard to ignore that failing.
At the end of the day, even after figuring out what book is right for your build, you still have to compare it against other weapon options like Rods (Sages) and Maces (Priests), where it might lose out anyway.
Books are such strange weapons...but I do love them so and use them against all good logic.
PS: WTB Malangdo Enchantable Encyclopedias.
PPS: Correct me if I'm wrong, I did this while juggling conversations...

Nice calculation. I'm bad at math, so I always conclude that Crimson Bible is bad weapon for magic attack, as it doesn't have base MAtk. It is good weapon for TKM or STR based Sorc tho.
But knowing that LoD owning PoM on high upgrade is surprise. Well, I guess that from level 4 weapon. Chilly Spell Book is better, and enchantable too, but it's rare to find it in market and the enchant success is worse than Malangdo. I hope we get Rockridge update soon, that Elemental Prayer is the best present for Spell Fist/Hindsight Sorc ever get.
Oh it remind me, there will be Evil Mind weapon series too. Evil Mind Book looks good, has base MAtk, MAtk bonus like Crimson, and level 4 weapon

Oh, so there's a whole new set of books on the way. I can't find info on those Evil Mind weapons, but that Prayer book!

Turn out it doesn't have base MAtk, but it has same MAtk refine bonus as rod and staff (refine*refine)

That's something to look forward to, thanks. I don't think even a Malangdo enchanted Ledger can compete with that.

it is a great sheet to compare each book dmg.. and it helps me much in knowing more.
Thank you for that
Anyway, talking about the best book fr spell fist sorc, so, what do u think which book is the best? From that list, i can see
ledge of death> principle of magic>encyclopedia>crimson bible when come to damage?
I managed to make a +14 principle of magic, but slot with 2x faithful manager cards and a clean +12 ledge of death, with enchant sharp 5 and FS 6. But, unfortunately, from the list, principle of magic is not as good as expected.
hmm.. btw, just curious on what cards are best to slot into that ledge of death? any suggestion?
One thing i dont really like the ledge of death is that luk-20, which has great impact on crit hit (fr aspd crit sorc)..
