As a linguist and a teacher of English, I have to say that it should be more specific. Let's analyze it.
If I say, for example "My kid can have candy or chips", nobody will think that my kid is going to have chocolate.
However, if you say "My kid can swim or jump", people will probably assume that he can walk, too.
So, you can look at it as a "possibility" or an "ability". I can get A or B as in ability to get it, or I can get A or B as a possibility to get it.
As you can see, here it is ambiguous and therefore we couldn't have known it. We lost money because of their grammar. So, they should change the statement to, for example, "it may yield a red car or a yellow car", only then, I would have actually known.
