The main reason to use spears is for Pierce and MVP tanking. 4s Pikes can be used in one hand allowing use of a shield, and being that they've got 4 slots you can take full advantage of damage cards. As for one being "much better" than the other, it comes down to preferences, the difference in damage is not very large and Brandish requires less setup to use properly, though it does have a minor cast delay. So if you're a fan of bowling/herding cats, BB is the skill for you. I'm lazy so I rather use Brandish for mobbing.
Since we are using renewal mechanics, 4-slotted level 1 weapons are very poor decisions except for offhand weapons for Assassins.
Also keep in mind that Brandish Spear has a 1 second cast delay and a 1 second cast time, so if you are looking to kill an MVP or DPS down a strong single enemy then Bowling Bash is definitely better.
I suggest BB, but obviously you go with whatever you enjoy playing more.
EDIT: I decided to mess around a bit with brandish spear on eggs since I realized I hadn't used it since like 2012 and... it's weird.
So if you are on the 3rd cell from the egg, you do 6x your damage. If you are on the 2nd cell, you do 3x your damage, and if you are exactly next to it, then you do 5x your damage. Not sure how diagonals affect it, but yeah.
