45 defense, 0 weight 1 slot..

mink coat = 30 defense, 230 weight 1 slot

silk robe = 20 defense, 40 weight 1 slot

is 45 defense better than +10 mink coat?

Hook me up with small zeny fee for my time and ill help you get suited. should not use those armors except for a wizz n possible a priest class other class defiantly don't use em.  other swap card should be put on something like a +10 robe.

+10 Mink Coat gives 48 def while +10 Silk Robe gives 48 def and 20 mdef. If you can afford them, those two is better than Novice Adventurer Suit. While the latter boasts high base def, it is character bound. You cannot use it on other character and you cannot sell it to other people should better armors come.

On a similar note, How important is armor def? My instinct with any card I find is to put it on universal gear so any character I make can use it. Is that a mistake? Does the extra armor from knight or merchant exclusive gear really make much of an impact?

Assuming def formula on wiki is correct then damage reduction from equips is (4000+equipdef)/(4000+equipdef*10) meaning that you need 50 defense for 10%, 200 for 30%, 500 defense for 50% reduction and it caps at 90% at infinity.

Knights (swordsmen) can reach 200 with exclusive gear and shield, but that kills versatility if you have several different classes and those equips dont protect you form magic damage at all (and you need 60 item mdef for 30% magic damage reduction).

If you want versatility then using silk robes and coats is the way to go: +4 Coat[1] is better than novice adventurer's suit in all aspects.

Yeah, although it is quite heavy, Coat is so far the best. Accessible by most class, high base def, and no level requirement.

But in my experience on Renewal, I did fine leveling with just +7 Hard Jacket and +7 Immune Muffler until I switched to class exclusives.

you would have done fine even without overpriced overupgraded items. difference between +0 an +7 is 10 def and it means very little in renewal, unless you stack high def items and have High Priest with Assumptio.
