Reached level 20 and have nothing, but my novice weapon.

I stuck with my Novice Weapon until level 30s. It's just the reality.

 

Create a Merchant, get Overcharge level 10, pick up loots and sell them to NPC so you have money to get better gear from Weapon Dealers.

Actually you can also just create a novice, and talk to the merchant NPC in the combat area to try out the merchant skills.

For some bizarre reason this includes overcharge 10, and you can simply walk out of the novice training grounds with it. Just don't go over level 12 or you wont be able to use it.

 

Overcharging all of your loot definitely is an immense help.

 

Most towns have a weapon/armor store. I believe the fancy modern minimap has an icon for it and will guide you right to it if you click it. Whatever town you job changed in will be the best place to buy a weapon for yourself. Just make sure it's better than the novice weapon, because the novice weapons are actually quite powerful for starter weapons.

 

If you're more adventurous, check Ragial since some merchants with 'discount 10' sell the items cheaper, or people get them from monster drops and sell them cheap. I got a 55k~ weapon for 15k that way.

 

EDIT: a bit of an advanced tip, create a second account and make a merchant on THAT account, so you can open a merchant shop and not hinder your main account while you vend. This also makes transferring zeny from your merchant much easier. You can find items to vend by searching more important looking stuff on Ragial and seeing if people sell them. Also shows what price to sell them for more or less.

Tbh, you can use the novice weapons they gave you til your job change. They are pretty strong. If you take the test with the last guy in the training grounds, he will give you a different weapon aside from a cutter, which is a lot stronger. For now, if you can, save your zeny for consumables. Otherwise, an NPC weapon would suffice. Also if you can, do job lvl 50, which is easy if you party in Toy Factory. You will get free stuff as well!
