Yeah you can use summons, there's just a really low drop chance on some of the 2nd job quest items!

check out the conditions column in this output for the second job soldier quest.
in step 2 there is a 50% chance of the crown dropping but it cannot drop for the first 5 kills
In step 5 there is a 30% drop chance. not too bad really until you discover that nothing drops for the first 20 kills
that's why it takes so long.
