Exactly how bad is the bot population on the Valkyrie server? I mean, am I going to be able to talk to actual people while I'm grinding away for hours on end, or is it basically just a "Sit there and watch TV while you grind" type of thing?

Also, is Valkyrie the only F2P server?

Valk is the only F2P server. In the near future (jan/feb), you'll be able to connect to Ymir on a free account, but will have free-server rates if the account is unpaid. However, you won't be able to create characters if the account is not paid (to prevent a bot invasion) - you could pay once, and make a bunch of novices, and not have to pay again.

There are lots of bots (a few players bot, but most of the bots are chinese and now russian gold farmers). The bots are very very visible, especially at the lower levels, and they have novices yelling in town that don't really get banned much (in large part because they come back so fast, since they just have to make account, log in, and talk to a few npcs, then set it to spam). The GMs are, last I heard, working on some new anti-bot measures, but so far, i'm not aware of any significant improvement in the bot situation.

Naturally, Ymir is almost totally bot-free. (almost)

^^^ This is very true. I hope that with the changes coming Ymir stays Bot free...

There's plenty of actual players to talk to on Valkyrie, I've found(even in just my first day of playing).
Have already had people point me in the right direction almost instantly when I approach a crowd and ask a question.
It seems the RO community is more newbie friendly than other MMORPGs I've played.
