Okay this is annoying me because I can't find the answer anywhere online. When I talk to the battle trainer he says I'm high enough level to choose my first job. I'm at job level 10; however when I try to change my job to mage the trainer says my basic level isn't high enough. That's fine and dandy, but what friggin level do I need to be? I can't find the answer anywhere online, and frankly it's a tad annoying that even the npcs in the game are contradicting each other. I'm basic level 4. I think it's redundant to have to run all the way back to the trainer each time I level just to see if I can choose a job.
Unclear on how to change jobs

Hi, you cant change job at the training ground.
Also, to change job you need to spend all your job skill points first.
If you tell us what job you want to change i can link a guide. In any case, if you have a question about monters or quest i suggest you to google using irowiki

Okay so the fact that the mage trainer is telling me my basic level isn't high enough means nothing? I want to become a mage, there are no skills to allocate my job points into, and I feel like I'm missing something here. I just want to know who I actually have to talk to.

I am pretty sure you are confusing something due to a bad dialog. I have made many novices and i have never had that kind of problem
If you want to change to mage class first of all you need to go to Geffen city. In there, on the top left corner you can find the npc inside a house
For that, you need to be Job level 10, which is different from Base level. When you reach job level 10, you need to spend all the points on your Alt+S window.
