Nope, everyone HAS to Speak English at least once, specially when talking to the GM. As for normal conversation in-game and not annoyingly talk to someone repeatedly even when ignored and even blocked messaging (like using /ex "Name") using a language the other person doesn't know, there's no problem with that.

If some non-English speaker wanted to talk to a GM WITHOUT using English, that's DEFINITELY a no-no, regardless if the Global Language changes or not.

And again, if you don't mind not talking to a GM and only talk to a fellow player who knows the language, there's no problem.

International doesnt mean everyone has to speak English. International literally means involving more than one country. English is just a global language due to UK colonization and influences through politics and military power (but this might change if we have WW3 and we might have a new global language). Being said, English is a language used to connect people around the globe but if individuals dont necessarily have to speak English if they dont want to. Then you just have to ignore that individuals. There is no right or wrong.

 

So you admit that English is the global language, English is used to connect people, and that this is intended to be the (western-hemisphere focused) international server. In that case as the international Ragnarok server located in the US and ran by an American company, everyone should speak English both out of respect for the hosts and also because English is more or less the international language.

Yes English is the global language but players are not obligated to use English in the international server to talk among players. English is only required if a player intends to get supports from the staff.

last night when im on a party in orc field the leader talks other language nonstop , i thought they were normal chatting on his/her friends in party until it end up all caps with exclamation point , i told to him/her "beg your pardon mind saying in english" and he/she gotten too angry , until one of the members who understand the language is he/she saying "dont complain if the party has no priest to buff or heal us" i didn't know that there was a argument so i just keep quiet and continue doing slightest mind leveling on my rogue , this is a example of bad communication if all of talking english we can understand each other if you cant say it then you ask to the members to translate it no need to beast mode when we say please translate it to english or something, i know not all happened this situation but it might happen again...

Unless you actually believe a server where everyone speaks different languages, which isolates people and causes conflict, is a good thing, you should stop.

If you feel isolated, then go find people who speak the same language of yours, so you can feel engaging and comfortable. You can also learn the said language in order to get along with those people if you find them interesting.

Since the culture of iRO has been in English for 16 years, the server is run by an English speaking company located in an English speaking country, and because this is supposed to be the international server and you've admitted that English is the global language, there is a clear obligation to speak English.

 

That doesn't mean they are required to do so, but they are definitely obligated if not out of simple respect for the hosts even aside from the myriad of reasons already mentioned.

If players are only able to interact with certain scattered segments of the player base, this will inherently isolate many people, make it harder for newer players to socialize, create fragmentation, and harm the overall sense of the community.

It's not that people hate minorities. When a huge influx of a different culture comes into your community it can affect how your game play goes.

 

If you can't communicate with someone, how is that fun? Other games have party organization by language and/or have translators.

Then say goodbye to that person and go on your separate ways like nothing happened.

If having a person that doesn't speak your language affects your gameplay then either of you will have to adapt. This isn't that big of a deal.

Stuff like thinking an mmo is better off without people that speak your language is just weird backwards thinking.
After everyone has been advocating for more population, why are we complaining now?

I personally see no problem with people from other countries speaking their own language amongst their peers. What they're saying to each other isn't any of my business to begin with, so that's that.

 

In 99.99% of my interactions with people from abroad, they often first speak to me in their native tongue, then when I tell them I can't understand them, they either speak to me in English, or we just both move on. No issue there.

 

What really baffles me (at least in this forum) is how some people react in irrational anger over people speaking a different language, rather than English, in general. If they aren't talking to you, why do you care? If they are, simply say that you can only speak in English; and if they don't, you can both move on.

 

Some of you are even using a foreign player's (perceived) lack of skill in the English language as a crutch to justify segregating the community because of "culture," which is actually raising some red flags for me, to be honest.

 

If there is a point to iRO, it's to bring together people from all over the world, not to divide them. If English is the only language that is supposed to be spoken throughout the entire community, then WP staff would have been enforcing such a rule a long time ago.

I agree to these statements, even closing the thread, except that what really bothers me is those non-English speakers keeps talking to me even when I already told them I can't understand their language, and when I already ignored (and block with /ex command) them to move on.

iRO services regions with multiple official languages users are welcome to speak any language in game or on the forums. That being said our official business is conducted in English and the expectation is that support will be in English. We will do our best to accommodate users who have trouble with English but it is not something we can guarantee.

Booting someone after building a party is a pain in the . Now you have to go search for someone else. You can't adapt to people that can't speak your language. Tell them stop doing X then they'll ignore you or speak a language you don't know.

 

That's why other MMOs have regions and at the very least, party searchers that filter by language or have translators. iRO was flawed in this the day it was released.

I think anyone can agree that learning a new language just to communicate with people on the same server as you, is ridiculous.

English is the global language that people officially use to communicate, given that the two parties are capable of. Otherwise, they dont communicate and no one is wrong. And what do you mean the server is run in an English speaking country? Again, America doesnt have an official language. America can also be a Spanish speaking country or Mandarin speaking country, and etc. Thus, nope, no one is obligated to speak English in game.

 

Of course it is ridiculous to ask antone to learn a language, so why are you asking none-English speakers to learn English in order to speak English to English-speaking people? Let me speak whatever language they want in game because it has nothing to do with you.

 

As Camp already said, multiple official languages users are welcome to speak any language in game or on the forums, given that none-English topics go to the respective sections. English is only required when players need official supports from game staff. Otherwise, in game, they can use and speak whatever language(s) they want and there is nothing you can really do about it
