Having it ON by default would be really nice. No kidding.
But if you think about it deeply, it might not be the best course of action.
There's a lot of things that can go wrong when keeping pets, and making the system overly convenient will just bring out the negative effect of making players too lax and careless. I firmly believe that positive habit-forming would be better help for this case.
Plus, if you can't even lift your finger to click twice just to enable autofeed, then you probably don't deserve it : P
Otherwise, we'll be seeing more of these problems down the line:
> "Help, I was too irresponsible to check whether I had enough pet food before going afk and now my pet is gone due to my overflowing reliance in the convenience of the system than in myself"
> "Help, I lost all need to check up on my pet status window because pets r supposed to be ezpz, and I've died one too many times recently, so now my pet has left me because I am actually a bad owner that didn't check its intimacy status often enough"
Here's my own suggestion:
> Make the notification for "Autofeeding is active/inactive" more notable and easier to notice as well as giving it a better sense of urgency.
"Autofeeding is inactive" > red
"Autofeeding is active" > green.
Having the autofeeding status shown in the pet window would be great too (just like homuncs) but that would need the studio's help.
> Have the game remember the status of autofeeding, so there would be no need to re-activate it if it was already turned on before.
