Is there one recommended or does much better in combat over the others?

Other than the obvious improved potion creation chance with vani.

The only 2 useful Homun I only know are Vanil And Amistr. Filir can only buff itself and not its owner and Lif, even with Homun AI available, is useless.

Vanil: Aside from Improved Potion Creation, there's a "random" heal skill that can manually be used. Just make sure there are no enemies around when using it. Most of its useful skills are only good outside of combat.

Amistr: All of it's skill (aside from it's Ultimate) are useful, even when manually used and all good for combat.

Try get a Amstir and use him to combat, my alchemist are level 70, and my amstir are 28, he cant help me in combat, and i cant lvl up my homunc alone

Another victim of renewal being designed around renewal content. (ie third job)

Admittedly I do want a vani since I'm building this guy for making items, if only for making cheap potions with those pesky herbs found everywhere that are mostly useless for everyone else.

[edit yo!]

Well got my blob after the fourth attempt.

Those embryos are costly :sob: , but I don't trust my luck with making them.
