What are gems for? Like if I have a ruby or diamond. Other than crafting a higher grade gem, how do I use it?

You can use a drill to drill a hole in any weapon, jewelery or suit. Then by equiping it and dragging the gem you want to use to that item, the gem will attach itself to that piece, making it stronger.

Grade 1, 2 and 3 gems can be dropped by monsters. An Artisan who has the gemcrafting skill can take these gems and craft them into higher grade gems.

OK thanks. So as I understand it, you don't need to be dealer or artisan to use gems.

1. To use a gem, you must insert it into the socket of a drilled item. That item becomes enhanced according to the gems attributes.
2. To drill a socket into an item, use a drill on it.
4. There is a success/failure possibility for drilling an item. This rate is based on drill. Not on concentration or other player stats.
5. After socket is drilled, any gem can be inserted without success/failure possibility.
6. You don't need to be a dealer or artisan to use drills or gems. Any player can do it.
7. Only weapons, armor, and jewelry can be drilled. Not other items/sub-items.
8. Artisans have a skill that allows them to craft all grades of gems.

DRILLS:
Mythril Drill--------10%
Orihalcon Drill------20%
Adamantinum Drill----30%
Demon Metal Drill----80% (Item Mall only)
Perfect Drill--------100% (Item Mall only)

You're right about everything except the last one. Higher grade gems do drop in boxes but they're very rare.

There are 'Aurum drills' as well. They are a bit better then the adamantium drills. Just so you know! Good luck completing your set.

No it isn't possible to drill multiple holes in an item

Out of the clothing items only suits can be drilled. (you can't drill shoes, hats, masks, wings/backshields/backpacks or gloves)

So basically it's like Geddeh said earlier.
You can drill and gem Weapons, suits or jewelry items.
nothing else

No you can't drill those.

You can only drill the body part of your outfit, weapons or jewelry.

It is completely impossible to drill hats, gloves, shoes or any other equipped item.
