mainly asking because although i did complete the mother's day quest, (i typed in turtle general without caps though, so didnt get exp for that) I got the Kafra tickets, but the quest remains in my quest log. No big deal... but just annoying

You can't abandon them, but right clicking on it will cause it to go to the "inactive" list. The quest journal is buggy.
