the issue for me while leveling mage wasn't so much about the damage, but the cast time. You have this huge slow cast time and then are rewarded with only mediocre damage, then the monsters suddenly teleport to you due to position lag and kill you. The fact that monster HP jumps up and you can't one-shot mobs anymore makes it really hard to level with anything other than bolts at around lv 90-95ish
