OK, I've a returning player to RO after a good number of years, and I thought that the usual /bm or /battlemode would turn on, well, battlemode. And according to /h (the help) it should.

However, I find myself staring at the screen and fiddling with all the keys, hitting Enter a lot, to no avail. I can't seem to turn this on---the usual message "Battle Mode [ON]" or whatnot never appears---and there's no way I can play the game without it. I can do other commands, like emote-ing, quickspell, etc, but battlemode stubbornly refuses to obey.

What am I doing wrong? I'm sure it's some ridiculous fix that I didn't think of, so I'd love feedback. Thanks in advance!

Battle mode is always on. you have to set up your hotkeys though.

I guess they forgot to update the help when we got battlemode.


Go to Option, Shortcut Configuration, then tick "Chat mode Activation". You can also set up your keys at this window.

Thank you two for replying! I'll be going out to dinner, then when I return I will fiddle with the interface and see if I can get things to rights.

Wow, it's kind of depressing to have left with a level 97 High Priest, who seemed decent, just to return and watch an Arch Bishop do a High Heal for 4k+.....but since this is just for nostalgia's sake, no way am I going through hell to rebirth AGAIN, dude =P

Battlemode was axed in favor of a much better system. You have 4 rows of hotkeys, and bind each key to whatever you want it to be (the settings for this are in options). Switch between battle and chat with enter, no need for /bm or any of that.

Also of note depending on how far back you go: Your hotkeys are saved to the server now, so you don't have to keep re-setting them every time you play on another machine.

3rd job extends from 2nd, there's no second rebirth. Pre 99 exp requirements have also been DRASTICALLY reduced, so 97 to 99 won't take even remotely close to as long as you're expecting it to.

And yes, back when I played (2003-2007 or so) I remember how everyone would cry like babies when you were 90+ transcendent and died in Biolabs. Or in that Dragon Cave area or, um, TT. Whatever that stands for again, haha. I'm sure there are better stages these days, I'll just have to poke around on the forum.

Yea the whole lving thing was basically redone last year. Lving from 1-99 is a joke now and can be done within a few days, same with trans 1-99. Once you get to 99/50+ (2nd class or trans) you can take the test to change to 3rd class which goes up to 150/50. It would always suck when you died at 90+, but now it's not that bad, you can regain that 1% (3% if non vip) within a few minutes.

As for the exp, 98-99 (non trans) use to be 100m exp, now it's 4m exp, and most classes can get 1-2m exp an hour at that lv, so it doesn't take nearly as long as it use to. But partying has kinda died until the higher lvs (130+?).

Wow, they really redid the exp grind....that's one of the reasons I turned away from RO back then, since it was just ridiculous to level anything. People bought Battle Manuals by the score because it was so depressing to die back then.

And I see, you can get up to level 150 now......guess that's why I was seeing Arch Bishops with such high heals, nevermind the High Heal skill. Although I was always a dex priest, so screw all that vit and int anyway! =P

Grinding is still a pain just not as much as before for lvls 99 and under.
