So I died from a mass of alarms in the clock tower and was teleported back to Geffen (My last savepoint). As I begin to walk, I get the notification: "With a flash of light from Geffen Foutain, the door to Geffenia has opened" And a portal opened up. I figured everyone received this notification, so I decided to walk in. Stupid me only had 20hp since I had just died, and found myself dead within 30seconds (there was no way out).
Can someone explain to me how the portal opens? I want to go back and explore and such. Please don't tell me it's a one-time deal. haha

I think you need the item the sign from the sign quest

Partially right, you need the Lucifer's Lament item that you obtain thru the sign quest.
