Been hunting pearls from sea otters as I'm making 2 merchants (one destined for smithing and the other alchemy, and each needs 7 pearls for first job quest skills) and I have to say, even though I am a few levels above them, they mess me up. They have this water ball skill or something (which they can use anywhere on the map not just in shallow water) and they get the casting symbol under their feet and then BAMBAMBAMBAMBAMBAMBAM they take half to two thirds of my hit points. And if there are assisters and another one does the same in that fight, I'm dead.

These are normally not hard to kill...but if they decide to cast, ouch.

So, I am wondering...if you see them doing the casting which takes a second or so, can you use the Hide skill and it doesn't hit you because you are in the ground hiding? (the first obvious answer is go see, but it takes a 3 zone trudge from Pharos to get to them, and my merchant is on now desperately trying to buy pearls.)

I have seen that spells are either interruptible or resistable...as while I am hitting them they start the casting animation and then nothing goes off. And I sure have learned not to just try to run past them after they have started after me.

Oddly, the text window I have battle damage going to, when I "review the tape," only shows them inflicting 72 to me, but the spell takes at least half of me off, and I have 3000+ hps. Sea otters...they will mess you up.

It's probably more efficient to simply get a Swordfish carded armor to resist water-type attacks like that. In Renewal, spells from monsters have been buffed in a way that the damage formula has something to do with their attack. Having the reaction to Hide from Waterball might not be efficient enough if you happen to encounter large mobs.

That or you could simply Fwing away as soon as a monster gets a cast off.

I haven't explored carding things yet, the cards sell for a lot and I am still low on funds yet. I'm using Eden group gear for now.

I did find that yes, you can hide and it seems to cause them to abort the spell. Did it a few times now. Even once where it seemed like it hit once out of the normal 5 or 7 chained hits and stopped after one when I hid, I might be mistaken on that last bit. But yes, it does seem possible to hide from a casting monster.

also would hate to customize an item for this situation as once I get 9 more pearls, I probably won't be coming back to this land of sea otter craziness.

Water armor is useful to have in general. Mainly because of waterball.

Hide will prevent most skills and attacks from hitting you. It will not work if the skill has already gone off, but the damage hasn't hit yet, but it will work if the skill has not finished casting yet (and if you manage to somehow hide while getting WB'ed, the rest of it wouldn't hit, because eat hit of WB counts as a separate attack).

Note that Cloak and other similar skills do NOT let you dodge skills. Only hide (this is by design).

Thanks all for the info! I spent the last couple hours discovering many of these dynamics, I ducked a lot of them, managed to hide while the series of hits were going off and only got the first 1 or 2, and double-bounced on the hotkey and came out of hiding only to have it hit me anyway. But it certainly has made sea otters more manageable and I have 9 of my remaining 10 pearls, stopping because I got BORED and taking a break. A useful tactic to know!

I'll be looking into slotted items soon...been putting it off to get more money together, and once past changing equipment every week as I level. I wish the Eden group stuff had slots :waddle: I should just get cash shop stuff to sell and raise some millions and stop being a cheapskate. I am playing with level 40 Eden quest gear and Mr. Smile.

I'm trying to picture fighting enough sea otters to get 7 pearls on a Merchant, to get Crazy Uproar. I am failing to picture this.

Yeah, you need to stay hidden long enough for the WB effect to finish.

WB is crazy like that - you can even teleport, land near the monster WBing you and then move immediately, and find that you're still being hit by WB. Hell you can die, and get ressed, and get killed again by the same cast of waterball!
Likewise, you can kill a monster with WB, and if it respawns right near you, wb will continue hitting it. This used to happen all the time in geffen GD.

I'm trying to picture fighting enough sea otters to get 7 pearls on a Merchant, to get Crazy Uproar. I am failing to picture this.

You're not supposed to hunt the pearls on the merchant. It's a merchant. You're supposed to use your classes abilities to obtain the pearls; being a merchant, you're supposed to sell stuff and buy the pearls from other players. ;-) A task made significantly easier with buy shops.

There's no shortage of pearls sitting in people's storage. They drop like candy in TT, and there aren't many things to do with them, but most people don't NPC them, even though they're not worth enough nowadays to vend. If you put up a buy shop in eden group or at pront spawn for 5k each, you'd get the pearls within... i'd guess 30 minutes or less. And you have the 1 pearl you need to put up buy shop.

If you don't have a merch, talk to Mr Hugh (or is it Mr Jass? One of the two) in the assassin pub in morroc, and he'll sell you single-use items that let you open a buy shop to buy one type of item at a time (vs the skill merchants get, which lets you buy up to five kinds of item).

I had a buy shop up for a while the night before offering 10k each for 10 pearls with no takers in the Eden lobby. Bad luck I guess. But I did get my last pearl just now so it's all good, and hey, thanks to your help and some experimentation, I learned some things about game dynamics. The more you know/knowledge is power and all that :waddle:

Good to know I shouldn't feel vaguely shifty using other characters to farm for my merchant quests. And you're right, the ability to buy is the merchant power.
