There has recently been a lot of discussion about lag and how to fix it. It's not clear why there has been a sudden increase in interest in lag - certainly, if anything, I've been getting better performance recently.

Types of lag - there are several types of lag, all of which have different causes and different solutions. It is important to know what kind of lag you are experiencing. Find the kind (or kinds) of lag you're experiencing here

* Local Machine lag - While you are lagging, move the mouse around the screen. Does the mouse move smoothly, or is the mouse lagging as well. If the mouse lags, you are experiencing Local Machine lag. This is due to your computer being unable to handle RO. Almost any computer made in the last 7-8 years should be able to run RO decently, so if you're experiencing machine lag, something is wrong with your computer. See the section on machine lag below.

* Lag "spikes" - Gameplay normally does not lag (or does not lag badly), but sometimes (can be very frequent, or a only occasionally), the game action will hang for a period of time, and then suddenly start again, with the client "catching up" by showing the action that happened during this "lag spike" in fast forward. Lag spikes may end in "time gap" disconnections. This sort of lag is caused by packet loss.

* General lag - Fairly consistent lag, not spikes. This can be caused either by network latency or, in some cases, network settings on the client.

Under construction.
