I understand that HD ores are used to get your gears from +7 to +9, but I hear a lot of people talking about trying to +9 their gears and in the process their gears goes down to +1 at times. Does that mean you can use HD even before +7'ing your gear? Or must you +7 your gear before you can even use HD? I'm so confused!

The gear needs to be +7.

BUT

Once you started the dialog with your +7 piece, even if it goes below +7 you'll still be able to upgrade it as long as you do not quit the NPC dialog
