While the title says "lag problem" I honestly have no idea if this really is lag or not, and the problem itself is difficult to describe, though I'll try my best.

On Renewal RO clients, I have a problem where anytime anything "new" happens (as in, the very same thing hasn't happened in the last 10 seconds or so) the screen will freeze up for about 3 seconds and then resume playing as normal. Many examples include:
Clicking NPCs.
Clicking NPC dialogue.
Opening any menus in-game.
Clicking on any item in my inventory. (Clicking the same item more than once doesn't cause problems, but clicking different items does.)
Attacking enemies.
Enemies attacking me.
Enemies using skills on me.
An enemy being defeated.
A player being defeated.
Clicking skills in my skills menu or hotbar.
Anytime a new player appears on screen.
Anytime a skill is cast on screen.

I don't think it's my computer, since the only time I have this problem is on Renewal clients. Older clients don't have this problem at all with me. I have no idea if other people have had this problem as well or anything similar to this.

ASSUMING THAT YOUR INITIAL POST IS ACCURATELY DESCRIBING THE PROBLEM - namely, that it only lags when seeing a new animation/sprite on screen, not just randomly hanging

Textbook case of low memory, it sounds like your computer is low on memory (RAM), and performance is shot to hell because of having to constantly page data in and out of memory. Install more memory and/or stop running memory-hogs. If there's no obvious offender, rebooting the computer should help for a while.

Could also happen if your antivirus (or the builtin windows antivirus added in win7) has decided to scan in the background. For a while EVERY DAY my computer would grind to a halt at 1:00 pm.... I was baffled, until I discovered that it was the windows virus scanner, trying to scan a 35gb ZIP file, and decompressing the whole thing into temp location in the process - paging everthing else out of memory.

How much ram do you have installed, and what OS is this? (control panel -> system ) - I ask so that I can tell you whether the problem is the amount of RAM you have, or a memory hog running in the background.

I have 4 gigs of RAM installed and my OS is Windows XP. The thing is, this problem only happens with Renewal RO clients, and it happens all the time. I thought that the problem might be something running in the background as well, but the problem persists even when I try to shut off as many programs as I possibly can. I don't think it's my anti-virus program, as it tells me whenever it's scanning anything or updating. (My computer will slow down when it does, so that's usually the first thing I check.) What baffles me even more is that if I repeat the same action more than once, it doesn't happen. For example, I'll try to open up my inventory, and it'll freeze my screen for awhile then finally open, but after that, I can open and close my inventory without any problems for awhile.

I've had some of those problems before but after I did /aura that helped some.

I also did this and it helped a lot:

You sound advanced enough you could probably handled it without hosing your computer. Also I added exceptions to my RO client for my anti-virus so its not actively scanning it.

I tried /aura, unfortunately it didn't change anything. I'm aware of the Nagle Algorithm, I had already read that forum post and followed the instructions, but it doesn't fix the problem I have, it just fixes something else entirely that many seemed bothered by. (Though it never really bothered me, I appreciate the change regardless)

I honestly don't think it's a memory issue, I've had memory issues with other games before, and whenever I'm low on memory, my computer will warn me. I checked how much memory RO is using while it's in use, but it's nowhere near the limit.

I don't think its memory either, in fact I highly doubt it. I've had problems in the past with my HD if I went a bit without a defrag? Maybe something to try? Posted Image

I've got the same exact problem, but im running on win7 8gb ram, could it be related to ati drivers somehow?
Tried everything and nothing seems to work, i was about to switch to XP but after i saw your post i got my doubts...
Btw i tried /aura /skip , updating drivers, turning off ati catalyst, several compatibility modes (if not every mode), if i had a nvidia card at hand i would test it, but i dont ;<

I have a computer that works very well with viewing normal internet and also watching VODs but the only thing that also uses the internet but currently lags a lot [today] is iRO. It makes no difference whether it is logging in from the patch client, selecting server, selecting character, clicking the location to move character or ordering character to start attacking, all of these actions have lag and take around 5 or more seconds before anything happens to your action.

I don't think it is a problem with our computers but rather something wrong with the iRO server itself.

Look I even had problems getting to this forum thread to even post my reply here yet nothing else seems to be the problem when I go and use other websites... if that is not a hint that is it the iRO sever being the problem then I do not know what is...

PS: My Antivirus program is not scanning anything in the background so it is not my antivirus programme being the problem either...

Info: My comp is Vista with 2Gb Mem and using nVidia.

Make sure windows' power profile is set to performance, not power savings. Turn off rmclock's, atitool's or rivatuner's power management features if you have them. Even if it is set to performance on demand, sometimes the stepping can get stuck, especially with those that can't access .5 multipliers.

If that doesn't help, try turning off your antivirus. The newer security packages all feature behavior based scanning, they use kernel hooks to intercept all disk/registry/ram access, creates a huge overhead especially for older hardware.

Look ever since the weekend "adjustment" that iRO team performed, I have been having problems (both lag and loggin problems).

The iRO team said the "adjustment" should not kick people off the server however it could do and I was one of them. There was no detail about what the "adjustment" (or enhancement) was about or that they did but I do not recall.

Thing is, nothing has changed now when you compare my computer to itself before the weekend "adjustment" by the iRO team so if it is not my computer, or the memory or my antivirus software then what else could be the cause... hmmm... duh.

Anyways, right now even my patch client is not working. It says: "Failed to get 2011-10-04data_gm.gpf file" and hangs up.

Anyone else got better ideas?

Maybe I should check out another thread...

Yeah? Darn! What is going on? I'm from the UK... are users from outside USA experiencing the same thing?

Update on my problems:

I had to try 3 times before I could even submit a ticket to WP Support Centre (WPSC). Even though the first two attempts took 3 hours after I clicked the Submit button, both did not register with WPSC. I was getting tired of typing everything again on my 3rd attempt, luckily it went through.

Having submitted a ticket I tried to log in today to see if there has been any progress and I am confronted with another strange website...

Instead of going to the WPSC from clicking the support button at the top of playragnarok.com, I am taken to a website that had a log in for SmarterTracker. After a few attempts at the log in, nothing happens. Not even any sign of working in the background on my web browser...
