All right, who hasn't experienced this situation: You're in a field or dungeon full of aggressive monsters, and right in the middle of a fight, usually when you're surrounded, every character and every monster suddenly stops moving. It doesn't actually freeze, you can still rotate the camera, the monsters still do whatever animation they do while in "stand" mode, but nothing walks or fights. It stays that way for a minute or two, after which you get the message "Disconnected from server". When you log back in, you find that you're now back at your save point with you HP bar reduced to 1. The fun we have with this game!

Why can't the server disconnect the account as soon as the connection seems to get weak? Why does it always wait for the character to get killed off before disconnecting? Really makes you want to quit every time you lose 3% Exp like that.

The server has lost contact with the client entirely, and does not know if the client will start responding again (leading to the pause, then the game action "catching up" suddenly when it sorts itself out). If they were to shorten the timeout period, it would be more likely to DC the player as a result of lag spikes.

Also, they can't make the player vanish as soon as they DC, because A) normal packet loss lagspikes would DC the player and B) people could exploit it by breaking the connection when they knew they were going to die (would be particularly easy for bots to exploit).

No online game is going to handle a dead connection gracefully.

You should try to figure out why your connection is dropping out that much. Are you using wireless? Wireless can drop out for a variety of reasons that make no sense whatsoever - one user said their connection died when a street sweeper went by their house - and often has higher packet loss as well as compared to a wired connection. Wireless is not suitable for gaming.
