I'm thinking of starting a Thief/assassin. I don't know to much about them other then they seem a little more fun then the priest i'm currently leveling. I read a few of the posts here about them but couldn't figure out all the ups and downs of the types of builds. From what I understand its dagger/dagger double hit or katar crit builds. And I have next to no zenny to buy special gear since I have been playing this game less then a month. Any tips appreciated.

Well, Sins are easy to level and you can stick to your Eden Equips obtained by finishing quests in Eden Group. Keep them until transcendant. you don't need high end gears to level up. But Still, if you want to level up fast. It would seriously eat up a lot of zenies. The builds have a lot of Pros and cons so someone else can guide you thru that. It's just a matter of Leveling Techniques and Leveling Maps.

depending on what server you're playing on (ymir, valk, ygg),
you'd want to get in on some battlgrounds for the katar(s), at the very least.

start off by saving for a general purpose all around katar till you can afford carded gear - either npc katar[2] or npc jamadhar

bottom line though is you'll be using dagger/shield till you have a katar
depending on whether you're going to spend on kafra points or not,
recommend either sidewinder carded katar or chick hat/snake hat (realistically chick hat if you're going KP wise) with a katar.

you will generally level faster as a normal sin with chick hat / katar - double attack with katar levels faster than pure crit sin.
also, if you want to up your EXP rate, practice mobbing with Grimtooth

generally, the amount of DEX required to hit monsters will need to be sufficient for GT mobbing to work
go with this stat build if you plan to go GT mobbing to 99:
str 70
agi 70
dex 70

rest vit or luk
can increase agi, but realistically need at minimum 70 DEX to connect Grimtooth with a decent hit rate.

leave int at base


If you plan to go crit sin for the flashy numbers, that is fine as well. Just keep in mind the exp rate will be slower regardless of any kafra buffs and in game buffs compared to GT mobbing

here's a general renewal leveling guide I used for yggdrasil, from novice to guillotine cross, if this helps:

with basic eden gear, and pick up random katars/carded gear on the way.
join a guild and get help asap.

thief 1-40
eden quests
focus mainly on collecting bigfoot turnins, then gradually move to orc warriors -> zenorcs

assassin (job 40)
40-50
zenorc eden turnin

50-60
sandman/zenorcs

60-70
sidewinders/mantis

80-90
sky petites
ground petites

90-99
ground petites
dark priests
magma or magma2 with leech
Kobolds (highly recommend with GT mobbing - goes fast)

Transcend

Assassin Cross
repeat generally same as normal sin
from 50-99
kobolds to 99 most likely with GT mobbing


Guillotine Cross
100-110
magmarings/kobolds/anolians

getting to 150 is more of a time grind than an EXP grind...
