I'm brand spankin new to this, and I'm trying to pick a class.

This will be my first character.
I want to WoE/PvP.

Which are good characters? I would like to play a battle merchant of sorts. They appeal to me, mad chemist throwing exploding potions and having weird creations fighting for them or smiths that hit people in the face with carts and axes. Both sound fun.
So should I just go ahead and roll with it? Or is it going to be so nearly impossible that I just shouldn't bother as a first character?

Here are the character classes I find appealing listed by most appealing to least appealing.
Axe Mechanic-or-Geneticist/Warlock/Ranger/Sorcerer/Wanderer/Rune Knight/Shadow Chaser/Royal Guard.

Which would you recommend?

I wouldn't suggest the merchant class as your first character as they're both very costly in terms of leveling/gearing. Even more so since you want to WoE/PvP. They're also classes that primarily solo and this would probably bore you.

Ranged classes are a great place to start so I'd say shoot for a Warlock. You shouldn't have trouble finding groups to level with either.

Suras are highly viable in both PvP and WOE. Rune Knights are great as well.

Shadow Chasers and Royal Guard excel in WOE more than PvP.

Mechanics/Genetics are expensive to upkeep, but I'll vouch that they are fun to play. Magic is currently not good in WOE/PvP, due to cast delay and low damage. A support type Sorcereris nice, but a Warlock is not useful at all.

Leveling/gearing doesn't have to be costly if you're starting out even with the merchant class. You'll just be slower than the rich people who have been playing for a while, but heck, everyone had to start somewhere with a first character and 0 zeny. You just wont be spamming the zeny-costing skills, just auto attack instead. Find a priest friend to save on potting costs and resting times. It'll work.
Just remember to pick up every loot and check with Ragial to see if your loots are worth vending at whatever market price you find. You'll stash up zeny fairly quickly, eventually, if you don't just NPC everything before checking the market.
Follow at least the Eden's Group equipment quests to get free gears. It will last you well into your transcendent career (it did for my Rune Knight, which I mostly ctrl+click leveled with a priest partner).
