Should I focus on leveling my character before becoming a Thief because I think the thief job is inside the pyramid and I can't even walk around safely I die the first 3 steps in. Any suggestions?

It's not that bad, didn't you get a lot of novice pots? Pot like hell and run like hell. You just need to get to the center!
