I've asked a number of times before.
What is the point of Ragnarok Online?
What is the goal?
What is the story behind the name?

These are the answers I have received/found:

This game is SUPPOSED to have no goal, and it's awesome this way.
It's about getting your own personal goal, this gives you FREEDOM in playing.

For some these goals are WoE and PvP
For other these goals are MvP's
For some others it's just the fun while leveling and collecting anything small.

Everyone in RO has an own, personal goal.

^ I agree with this 100%. RO's story-line is nonexistent because it leaves the player's mind open instead of closed on a linear pathway. I did not understand this before but now I do. That is what separates RO from other games such as WoW and Maplestory and others.

I found this the other day.

RO sucks if you play alone. That's true for many MMOs. It is worse in RO's case, because the game is what you make it.

I ask again:
What is RO about then? It's got no storyline and is supposed to be about kawaii-ness and doing what you want. If you can't express yourself more then you're just another duplicate running around aimlessly doing nothing. Is that what RO is?

Does it need to be about something?

That's an interesting answer.
If RO isn't about something, then "it is what you make it".
If it's what you make it, then it should be more about self expression.
Without self expression, you're just another slice from the cookie cutter.

--------------

I wanted to ask what you guys think RO is about.
What is your goal?
What will you do when you reach 150?
What will you do as you level to 150?

Also I would like to say that I completely support opening a lot more cosmetic additions to the game other than a new headgear or back item. More hairstyles (and revamp the old if possible), more sprite costume color options, and more skin tones. Eye color doesn't bother me much and I don't think that it would look that great with the graphics of RO.

If this is a game where you're fixated upon appearances, which it somewhat is, then something like this should come about. More options to stand out and express yourself in this game all about you. Doesn't that sound about right?

And Gravity would make a good bit off of this as well.
Unlike the costume tab /fail.

I don't care about appearances. I play this game to grind and kill big mobs and level up. I don't need any other goal besides becoming stronger and richer. Kawaii headgear has no place in my heart.

(unless it drops a useful item)

Okay so you play for the grind (which is dying out these days).
You want to be rich and powerful.
Fair enough.

I think you're taking what people have said out of context. You're using people's opinions to illustrate something you want, something you think. Not necessarily something the contributor was trying to say.

It's fine to share what you think, but when I said that I wasn't trying to agree, disagree or really illustrate any ground breaking points. I was just pointing out how silly it is to want everything to have a clearly defined reason.

It's just bad taste to take what other community members have said and take it out of context to support your own goals.

And your quote was entirely what I posted.

Really, I just want to know what people think RO is about.
Also trying to see who else is up for more color options.

Idk what you're talking about with personal goals. I posted everything in quotes to show what people think RO is about.
Not to do something about something... tbh I don't even know what you're insinuating. I wanna know if people understand the point of RO and why it's called RO and whatever else.
I want to learn about it because nobody else that I asked seems to know.

Of course RO has a storyline. It's actually quite complex in places, if somewhat badly translated. I guess you never really bothered to 'read' the quest dialogue boxes and just kept clicking 'next'.

A good place to start to learn what the story line behind some of the aspects of the game is
http://forums.irowik...ead.php?t=49821

also read the Ragnarok manhwa

I thought the 'fun-gineers' were supposed experts on the game? (apart from the obvious exceptions such as Xellie, Azzy etc, I'm often amazed at how little some of you know about the game and it's history)

I'm talking to Okii about RO storylines right now.... but to respond to that, really, even if me/azzy etc are 10 year veterans who know the formula and story behind everything (I hate quests so stories don't stick with me) it takes all types to understand RO as a whole.

Newer people such as Okii have an insight into RO that no veteran could ever have. What it's like now trying to understand all the things everyone else has taken years to understand.

If you need a "reason" to play a game you might need to reevaluate your life as a whole.

Games of ancient are designed to distract you from your daily routine and offer a fun social way of spending excess time.

No game has a point. It might have a plot or setting, but if you want to get deeply philosophical, not even life itself has a point, or so I could argue.

The underlying factor is fun. A game should be fun to the person playing it.

To answer the question you pose; There is no point but to have fun and enjoy yourself.

So RO is based on a korean manga?
And the anime doesn't relate to the manga very well..
and the game relates to neither and if it does it's slight...

Okay so--
And Norse mythology?
RO is made up of a lot of things I never knew it was made up of.

Yeah, differences of perspective is definitely a valid point, but does that answer the question of why 'expert' positions are held by admittedly inexpert players? Am I wrong in thinking the 'fun-gineers' act as representatives for the entire player base (and that their opinions are therefore more highly regarded by the staff)?

From that standpoint, one might question the wisdom of having a disproportionate ratio of amateurs to veterans.

Fungineers are volunteers that organize ideas from the community in links to topics for GM's.
We work with ideas from everyone and we work together with everyone.

I'm new so I help with new player relations and organizing suggestions and proposals.
I don't suggest much myself, honestly.
Unless it's something I have seen that would plainly make sense, then I don't really say anything.

.hack//sign came out around the height of Ragnarok Online's popularity.

I always associated the two for some reason. So RO is the quest to find Tsukasa or something. I actually changed all my RO music to hack//sign music. Yeah.

Not drunk.

"The World and all of its wonders; this is my world, you see."

They don't represent really. The forums are because it's hard to discuss and keep track of ideas and stuff in the general area... people like to de-rail or make dramamama.

Okay so is nobody going to contribute to the OP or..
I mean I just want to get a feel for what people play the game for and why.

I play because I don't feel like I have to be max level to do what I want to do.
In a lot of games, you can't do anything until you're waaaay up there, so it's stressful trying to rush your way there.

It's an interactive chat room for a lot of people.
For others its for the sense of accomplishment.
For those like me they're here to relive the days when the game first came out.
Then I'm betting the others are here because Cataclysm is boring as hell.

I want to experience preRE for myself.
I want to feel accomplishment at hitting 99 after months of playing.
Literally, you can get a character to 150 in under a week if you can get BM's, a reliable party, and reset stones.

Another semi-sensical response to my dearest Okii:
(a little psychological means of assessing)

Reasons for playing: chat/pvp/mythology
Motivation: getting stronger/killing with style/achieving other people never did/story quests
Knowledge Database: I know Norse Mythology. Ragnarok story doesn't revolve in the end of the world in-game.
Now its about chasing a satan fleeing on an alien area.

Extra: Ragnarok game contains: Norse, Greek, Roman, Irish, Germanic mythology.
Taekwon is a biased character, the only one which came out in the modern world and not an ancient art compared to other classes. (darn korea)
Scandanavian people are pagans and there those days already existed christians. Means priests are on par with the game.

Another reason of playing this to end my last paragraph:
I HATE games where you choose your race so Allods,WoW,Mabinogi and other things deserve my midde finger.

PSS: it also consumes low bandwidth. Otherwise i'd play LoL or Jade Dynasty

What is the point of Ragnarok Online? money
What is the goal? money
What is the story behind the name? something interesting about the world ending to lure people in to generate some money

What is your goal? waste time on ro
What will you do when you reach 150? waste time on ro
What will you do as you level to 150? waste time on ro

RO is a tangent that seems to have survived from dissatifaction a particular
segment of the gaming community feels towards WoW style MMOs. There is no point.
But then again I don't see the point of snuggies, yet people still buy them.

The Goal of RO is whatever you want it to be? You set your own goals at your own pace.
Need ideas for goals? These were pre-renewal goals that I completed:

-Mobbed all the porings on poring island.
-Morphed a bio monster in town and killed all the merchants.
-Learned to loot like a zenorc.
-Made a +7 Spore Hat.
-Made first 100 mil.
-Got to the emp room in Brit 4(shout-out to the Iris peps)

Story? RO actually does have several active storylines. Most of them are kinda dark, tales of corruption
and betrayal. You have to do quest. I'm from the RPG school or "mash action always" so I click on every
NPC instinctually and over the years have completed about 80% of ROs quest as a consequence.

I have only played for a short time (started in mid July), so quests weren't really something anyone was doing. I did the quests to get to Nameless and Rachel Sanctuary and those were interesting. What's your favorite quest? I'll go do it and see how I like it too :3
@@;; mobbed all of them? Wow xD
