There are no new drivers for my video card, but I am getting the cannot init d3d. directX is installed and running. Both options had a card/resolution selected at the top of the setup menu without me changing anything. I am on a Windows XP DELL Inspiron 9300.
Cannot init d3d error, both options in setup selected

I split this off from the graphics thread to get more visibility.
This is a rather unusual issue:
* d3d and graphics drivers are present
* Option selected in both menus in setup
* It's XP, so it's not the UAC issue where you need to start setup as admin.
So what the hell is it?
Can you list the specs on your computer (particularly as relates to graphics card)?
Have you tried starting RO after a clean reboot? - I've heard of some systems with low-spec graphics cards giving that error if you try to run more than 1 d3d application at a time.
Have you tried uninstalling, deleting RO folder, and reinstalling, on the off chance that something got mangled somehow? (though I've never heard of this happening).
