The 1st class manuals you can get and equip in the novice grounds are supposed to enable low-levels of 1st class skills, right?
I tried both the Mage and Acolyte ones, and they didn't do anything except give me SP.

Make sure the skill window is in the list mode (as opposed to the default tree mode) and it should give you the skills like equips normally do. I know the acolyte one works at least.

Both Thief and Swordsman manuals work for me when I have the skill window on listing mode. Didn't know it's different with tree mode.

Perhaps the NPC should explain that to you? As a new player, you'd probably never figure that out.
