I advice spear or sword, preferrably sword cause they have more accuracy than spear champ, but as i never played a champ it's up to someone else to judge on this.
Skills is quite simple if you're going to aoe alone, get sword or spear (depending what you want), all the passives, and then learn the three aoe's, not sure about the names as i never made a champ.

And it could be useful if you say what you're going to use your champ for.
If you want to pvp, you may want to add yourself a good amount of con for acc (though aoe's can't miss mostly, they are half damaged if the attack is supposed to miss).
If you want to pve, con isn't as important cause monsters have a lot less amount of dodge.

However the Champion's AoE is only catches up to the Mage's after around level 140. Where the Mage is far superior for AoE before then.
Spear is more efficient in AoE when levelling in terms of the rate.
Sword AoE's much slower in cooldown and has access to them much later in the game, but they are more powerful.

Dex adds AP and Dodge
Con adds Accuracy and maybe a bit of AP
for soldiers mostly just need the one spear AOE as a soldier, you used to be able to get it at level 37 at the earliest i believe.
from there you need to decide Two-Handed Sword or Spear, and get Combat Cry which lowers the Defense of an enemy and does damage.
im fairly sure its combat cry but i don't have it up in front of me right now so i could be wrong!
- Spear AOE (Spin Attack?)
- Sword or Spear AOE
- Combat Cry

Choices are either a Spear or a Sword for the AoE.
Spear:
Spin Attack
Combat Cry
Achilles' Heel Strike
Sword:
Spin Attack
Combat Cry
Seismic Impact
The following will just be a basic outline.
In all, other skills that are highly recommended are:
Common:
Repose
Physical Training
Refreshment
Stamina Training
Weapon Attack (required to access two-handed skill tree)
Power Overflow (pre-requisite for Berserk)
Battle Alertness (Decloak - level 1 minimum)
Defence Training
Soul Wreck (Optional)
Two-Handed:
Your Weapon Mastery which you are focusing upon.
Leap Attack (Stun, for PvP reasons)
Weapon Launcher (2nd Stun, again for PvP)
Champion:
Melee Combat Mastery
Advanced Combat Mastery
Battle Sense Mastery
Your chosen Weapon Mastery
Champion Spirit (MP recovery passive)
Space Attack (Movement Speed Down, Reliable Magic Attack, Ranged) [From my point of view an extremely over powering skill for the class]
Quick Step
Berserk (This is an absolute must have)
As for stats, as said in other threads will depend on how you play.
If you want your AoEs insanely strong, then a STR, CON, DEX build is ideal at 3:2:1.5 or so.
This will make you have extremely high skill power.
Alternatively if you prefer melee, preferably STR, CON, SEN at a rate of around 3:2:1.5 or even higher for SEN.
This will make your melee attacks insanely good, but when it comes to skill power it won't be as much, where the AoE damage will be a lot less.
Gameplay:
Overall if you would like to have the best type of damage from your AoEs possible, I recommend using Combat Cry first, followed by whichever Champion AoE you have and lastly Spin Attack.
The Defence down will increase your overall damage in general for physical based attacks.

My weapon is a one handed sword and shield. My playstyle is questing and killing one monster at a time. now heres the thing should i go for knight or a champ ? i think i would like to change my playstyle into grabbing all mobs at one spot and do aoe but i dont like the idea of mashing buttons to keep my hp up , need your inputs here please

Knight = High Defence
Champ = High Attack Power
If you want to "lure the monsters around you then aoe", learn a unique skill called Sacrifice, it lures monsters towards you and can be very effective whilst leveling. Once the monsters are near you, use Swords of Divinity ( its a Knights Skill, an old storm charm animation with big black clouds ). You shouldn't have to mash buttons to keep your HP topped up, as spamming food doesn't do anything but kill you quicker ( food regen time vs total amount of hp regained ).
I would go for a Knight class at lvl 100 ( after your second job quest ), that seems to fit the description your asking for above.
As for your Skills as a soldier,
Suggested PvM Build:
( person vs Monsters ), max your passives from the 1st page of your skills:
Repose: lvl 9
Physical training: lvl 9
Refreshment: lvl 9
Staminal Training: lvl 9
Weapon Mastery: lvl 9
Defense Training: lvl 9
One hand skills: ( Knight Build )
One hand mastery: lvl 9 ( only if your going knight, not champ )
Shield Mastery: lvl 9 ( only if your going knight, not champ )
Shield Stun: lvl 5
This small build will take you to lvl 86 to max what I have mentioned.
| -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
If you decide to go champ
Suggested PvM Build
Repose: lvl 9
Physical training: lvl 9
Refreshment: lvl 9
Staminal Training: lvl 9
Weapon Mastery: lvl 9
Defense Training: lvl 9
Two Hand Skills:
Two hand mastery: lvl 9
Spear Mastery: lvl 9
Heavy Attack: lvl 9
Spin Attack: lvl 9 ( this is your first obtainable AOE as a soldier -> champ )
This small build should take you till lvl 94 to max the skills mentioned.
I've suggested PvM builds as I'm assuming you still have your free skill and stat reset's available, which later on you can use to change from a PvM build to a PvP Build.

Good Luck

Combat Cry is a Champ only Skill, Sorry to disappoint.
Sorry my bad wrong named one
Under the solider's two handed skills are the:
| battle howl | battle scream | battle cry |
the only prerequisite is to get | howl |
but I am not sure if investing so many points for a skill that is not worth it.
any thoughts?
