Well seeing as how we're currently in need of new blood (and with summer coming up there's going to be a few more folks around with free time on their hands) how about starting an event right now to create an ad for RO? Maybe go with a few different categories, like best 30-second, best 60- or 90-second, and best cinematic (no time limit). That way we'd have plenty of video to start pushing around the web.Yes we have done many contests for player created content. We usually receive very very few entries, prizes are always given for such things.
Also, why stop at video? How about poster and smaller web-based picture ads?
Also as far as live action stuff goes... it'll be tricky to pull off a really good looking one. I think the Halo series takes the cake for the best live action trailers - Halo 3 - Landfall Birth of a Spartan (Halo: Reach) Halo 3: ODST Halo Reach - Deliver Hope. I thought this Halo: Reach trailer was well done. At first with zero knowledge of the game you have to wonder what is going on, but having played it through, if I remember right I think I came across those guys. With some creativity (and good costumes) I can see a few different live action RO ads getting some interest.

I was thinking. When RO2 comes out internationally, would it not be a good idea to do a little advertising campaign? Perhaps we could come up with ideas now for such a thing. I was thinking a live action RO2 trailer. I base this off of a trailer i saw recently for another game I occasionally play. I'm not going to post it here, but if you want to see it I have it on my blog.
I think a little live action trailer made in the WarpPortal office could be funny, or perhaps a fan made contest would prove more fruitful. That would truly test the communities creativity. I think it would be lots of fun for all involved.
Anyway that's just one idea. What other ways could RO2 be advertised? Barring a TV commercial, because that's expensive, and may not prove successful enough.

You want an ad campaign? Try this: "No more cash shop!"

And how would you suggest they make income?

help a lot to get exposure in the target market and is rather cheap (if not free).
I actually think it would be wiser to not advertise it as a direct sequel to RO. Sequels bring to many expectations.

WoE videos can be used as form of advertisement as well...
But that animated RO commercial used as introduction for Oboro/Kagero are def the best advertisement I've seen so far on RO... not just cuz the animation but the meaning behind the video itself is what makes it more "interesting"... having the almighty Sura class in battle against the newcomer Oboro/Kagero and keeping a balance power between those two classes is what somehow makes the appeal for the commercial.

To be honest, I really liked the RO2 commercial...

Next thing you know, all other classes will be pushed aside and it will just be Kage/Oborous vs Suras from that commercial. I don't think that's the direction the game should be heading.

And how would you suggest they make income?
Game purchase + monthly subscriptions, like other reputable games.
A Cash Shop instantly makes a game look less respectable in my opinion. Almost puts it in the realm of a cheap mobile game when RO could be so much more.

RO is 10 years old. In order for the game to stay online and bring in income it needed to go free to play. If you recall it used to be a subscription based game. It wasn't doing so well.
Private servers had always drawn mass amounts of players away from RO with the allure of being free.
Sadly while trying out a new game the other day, I found out a lot of people still don't know RO is free now. I spoke of RO to someone and they said how much they loved it and how they are looking forward to RO2. When I told them RO is free now they were shocked and said they were going to go try it again.
Your own personal stigma against cash shops, doesn't justify switching back to a business model that would never work. If your willing to pay 12$ a month then spending that amount in the cash shop shouldn't be a problem for you.
Keep in mind MMO's are a buisness. They provide a service to you so they can make money. Without money the service disappears.
Most games choose to go free to play now. Not because they are bad, but because it's more a much more sustainable buisness model. There isn't only 5 MMO's to choose from anymore. A new one is released almost every day. There are so many to choose from, players are much more spread out and don't spend as much time in one world. Subscription models just don't cover the bills.

we all have our passions. It's just that RO2 hasn't brought anything to the market that would make me give it my
time over all the other games that I play both on and offline and a lot of other people feel that way too.
Talk about RO2 development always makes me feel like that money would have been better spent building a new engine
for RO and advertising that RO is free to play on places like congregate and newgrounds.

I don't know why, but I'm getting the feeling that a 16 year old just lectured me on economics...

A cash shop giving you overpowered/game breaking items that you cannot obtain in game in any away (Not tradable either) is terrible business.
Cash shop themselves are fine, I'd say iRO is currently on a very thin line in between.
There are good chances iRO would be closed at this moment if they didn't go free to play.

When you present a plan to an investor you must include goals and milestones you hope to achieve with your
customer base. Loyal returning customers spend more per transaction and advertise your business to others.
I wonder what RO2 business plan looks like? Maybe i can internets it somewhere.
