The old clan wars were clan vs. clan. Each clan had to give a certain amount of money to sign up. Once inside, you were confined to a small area beside your team's "dragon": an in-game, war-only monster that your team had to protect. The way you won was to kill the other team's dragon. Now, the winning team (aka: the clan leader of that team/clan) would get their money, plus a little bit, back, plus a certain amount of clan points, and I think a certain amount of brave talismans/bindrunes, as well. My clan leader(s) always just split the bindrunes and talismans amoung members, and kept the money.
Now, as to how they were abused....
Clan leaders (or someone else in the clan) would make (or have) an alternate character that would hold lead of a one-person clan. They would have their "noob" sign up for the clan war, as well as their main clan, and basically the entirety of the "main" clan would basically race to see how fast they could kill the "opposing" team's dragon. Continue this over and over. Free clan points, gear, talismans, and bindrunes for the clan. The extra money went to funding the continual sign-ups for the "noob" clan. However, there was still a tiny bit of lost zulie to the system, and that was usually payed by the main clan's members (split evenly), and seen as somewhat of a payment for the rewards (which, of course, were of greater value than that tiny bit of lost zulie).
I hope this helped!
