Are there or will there be any pet quests available?

None at the moment, we would probably have one on the released version of the game.

I could also see pets being able to be purchased from the item mall once the game is launched, being that extra bag slots are only available for players with premium accounts : \
It would be cool to have a non-combat pet (like some of the vendors do), and I would totally do a quest to get one... but if the devs want to make money off the game, they'll need to have items players want available only as cash purchases.

Reading europe forums; Pets doesn't battle, they give stats when you feed them item mall food.
But the food they require to remain alive is gold.. Yes.! Gold

Well this is good then. I hate the idea of having to pay money to be successful in a game that is "free to play"

the pets give buffs normally, keeping them alive...just keep them alive. i believe the item mall food will give the buff an extra boost so yeah

The pets are a MASSIVE gold sink, I don't think any of you want to see them prior to a cap raise.

Obviously a gold sink. But NOT that heavy.
If you constantly play and earn few golds it wouldn't be so bad. But for gamers that have a normal life and play 2 days per week or every 2 weeks, thus leaving the character on limbo are most likely to spend more on Pet care NPCs. Worst case scenario, spend lots of real life money for pet phoenix scrolls.
