So I want to make an AD alchemist and I've read how basically no points go into str and everything goes into int. That left me wondering, how the hell do I level up as a merchant? Is it basically going to be a living hell or is there some way around it?

The same way INT swordsman and Acolytes "level".

Leeching. Either pay for a leech, leech yourself, or get a guildmate to leech you. Clock tower, Geographers, Stings etc etc.

Acid Bomb (not Acid Demonstration, that's the translation used on some other RO's, but not iRO) is a Biochemist skill, not an alchemist skill.

So it doesn't matter how you build your character as a merchant or alchemist. It only matters how you build after you transcend.

Once you transcend and become a high merchant, it matters greatly whether you're playing on the Classic server, or one of the renewal servers.

On Classic, Acid Bomb is dependent 100% on the biochemist's int, and so you've got a nasty task waiting for you leveling High Merchant and early Biochem levels with a 1 str build. As Tetsamaru said, you'll likely have to leech. In any case, this is a long term issue, since trans classes aren't in on classic yet.

On Renewal servers (all servers other than classic), acid bomb is based on atk and matk, and cart cannon is based on atk and int, so the cookiecutter biochem->genetic build is appropriate (it's the cookie cutter build for a reason!), getting at least 70 str, 100+ int 100+ dex 100 vit by 150 - with the str obviously coming first to help you level through the pre-third-job levels.

ok okay, thank you! I guess I'm on a Renewal server so it's not that bad for me. Why's classic server so much more different?

The game mechanics were massively overhauled when third jobs were introduced - that's "renewal", and pretty much everything got changed. It would have been rather hard to extend pre-renewal mechanics to support the higher level cap and stats - pre-renewal, the top end of the game had gotten pretty ridiculous.

Classic is a response to demand from a significant portion of players who didn't like renewal, and preferred the old system.
