I'm making this guide to so that we will have MORE people playing a mage because there is a perception that Mage is totally crappy in this game...
This applies ONLY when fighting people of equal or SLIGHTLY better gears....
Open PvP (1 on 1)
1. Silence (Instant)
Start of with a distance of 7m-10m. Then the 10 (or whatever time you have for your build) seconds of silence is your perfect time to dish out your damage. Throw in your Explosion for the DOT. Cast Arrow (if warrior/berserker/assassin) to slow them from coming to you. Else it will be to slow the rest from running away from you. Continue by casting your most powerful spells (Fireball is you have -0.5sec to cast time or Ice Arrow if you don't). You can effectively cast 3-4 dmg spells in this time frame.
2. Electric Shock
This only apply if your build has that. Else, get a fear maestone. After shock/fear, throw in a Fireball.
3. Sleep
If you do not have E.Shock/fear, watch out before you sleep if you have a 10 secs DOT. That last 1-2 DOT will break your sleep. Now sleep is 30 secs and the CD is also 30secs. By this time, your Silence should be up. Cast Silence BEFORE sleeps end.
Rinse and Repeat.
Note: NEVER do a "chained" sleep. The 2nd sleep WILL fail and you just got yourself into deep poo... And when faced with an overgeared player......... Silence them, then Sleep them. Praise the player (say things like "omg... you are godly!!"), pop accelerate and get the hell out of there.
RvR & Open Mass PvP
Unless there is a leader telling you who to sleep, else, you need to pick up the correct target to sleep.
The rule of sleep:
1. ALWAYS sleep the cleric first. If that job is taken by someone else:
2. Sleep the mages/assasins. You will probably not see the assassin coming out of stealth so early unless he has stunned a target.
3. Super-geared dpser. They are hard hitting and if they killed your clerics/dpser... it is game over.
Your job next is to slow and throw DOTs. Unless they are very geared or have a cleric healing them, most will run back thinking they are "targeted" (which may be the case).
Electric shock those running away and throw in an Ice Arrow to reduce their MS.
Silence - Unlike 1 on 1, your silence should be kept for a crucial time as such:
1. When your group is killing off a cleric, silence the cleric to prevent them from healing
2. Overgeared Dpser rushing in to your group to deal painful AOE/dmg.
3. Overgeared Dpser rushing into your base to kill the squishy
All in all, I can only tell you the basis of playing a mage properly (up to level 59) but there will be circumstance where you have to consider other things. Staying alive is a big part of PvP. Pop your CD if you have to.
Do take note that the more experienced players in open PvP will have a mob to attack them for fear of you sleeping them. In this instance, to my experience, I will silence the player, kill the mob then sleep that player.
I'll add more later when I have access to the game... Supposed to be working now...
