Just a quick question I have about the crusader. What is more viable for the current state of the classic server: GC or Shield. I kind of want to go shield but is it good without a soul linker? I want to also be good at PvM and WoE. Thanks in advance for replies!

Grand Cross/Sac > good build for PVM and WOE but party dependent

So a hybrid then? Could you possibly list some pros or cons for each. Its just I think its kind of sketchy to lose like 20% of your HP just to cast 1 skill. Yet ive heard that without a soul link that shield boomerang is just not worth it.

grand cross provides massive aoe damage because int scales far higher with matk than str does with atk.

as a swordsman class you will not be doing nearly as much damage with any other skill.

it takes 20% of your current hitpoints, but you should really think about it this way
grand cross does so much damage it kills most things in 1 hit. If you time it properly you shouldn't take too many hits during the cast, considering the amount of monsters you can mob and kill in 1 hit.
if you were a shield sader, with your low damage output you'd take more damage in combat than GC to kill the same number of monsters. Your down time would actually be just as long because you have a lower SP pool and less SP regeneration.

if you run grandcross/heal, your sustain is determined not by your mHP/hp recovery but by your SP/sp recovery, which means you don't need to sit until you are out of SP, HP bar is something you don't really worry about and you can solo farm most of GH like a boss.

but, as he mentioned, if you run grandcross/sac you'll need a designated healer to level efficiently, still the sacrifice provides good party utility in both PvM and WoE situations. <- that's the build i would go personally.

i honestly see no pros in going full shield.

perhaps the pro is that no1 will bother to attack you in woe because you are one harmless kitteh :3

I usually just build my Crusaders either Agi-Spear type, or GC/Heal. Devotion IMO takes up too much Shield skills that you won't even be using, so unless that's a role you wanna really play, then go ahead. But if you wanna level efficiently, I'd choose to go the GC/Heal path, which takes up a couple points in Divine Protection, which kinda helps when fighting Raydrics.

Of course, if you're leveling in Raydrics and 1 shotting em with GC you have a higher chance of getting a Raydric card. Agi types on the other hand, with a Crescent Scythe(which is pretty cheap) is actually pretty efficient, high flee coupled with good defense, and high HP due to Faith. It's more effective than an Agi Knight IMO.

this is classic D:
spear quicken doesn't provide flee/crit and doesn't work with 1hand spears

not to mention if comparing effectiveness to efficiency then agi knights get better exp/h because they have bowling bash or pierce chaining, and all shield/spear saders have is holy cross at best for damage

the GC/sac path is good if you have friends/guild members who you always play with. back in the good old days when i mained a crusader i never actually had much chance to heal myself as i never leveled without a priest in tow anyways, and in times of desperation i find it to be safer to just use some white pots than to try and heal yourself since pots have no after delay time whereas heal does

[edit] and also, crusaders have way lower hp pool to begin with i don't think just by having faith 10 would allow you to have more hp than a knight class would it?

It's 2000 more HP. lol
And no, regardless if it's Classic or not, Agi Crusaders would still level faster.

You don't expect an Agi Knight to go mobbing with BB, can you? The only downside of an Agi Sader when compared to an Agi Knight is that it looks like they're trying to Pelvic thrust the mobs to death.
