I've written some new instructions because those in the initial post of this thread are very outdated. :)

How to install the Ragnarök Online client on Ubuntu 12.04 ("Precise Pangolin")
  • Open Terminal.
  • Enter "sudo apt-get install wine".

Note: If you want to to install the very latest version of Wine, then follow these instructions instead.
  • Enter your Ubuntu user account password if you are prompted to do so.
  • Enter "Y" to confirm that you want to install the specified packages.
  • Accept the TrueType Core Fonts for the Web license agreement. (Use the left and right arrow keys to select a button, and the enter key to press the selected button.)
  • Enter "winetricks vcrun2008".
  • Complete the Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable installation.
  • Open the IRO client installer file in Nautilus (the default file manager) and then complete the installation process normally.

Note: It can take several minutes for the IRO client installer to initialise. Additionally, it is normal for the installer to behave like it is frozen during the installation process.
Tip: Disable the "mouse exclusive" option in the Renewal client's configurator to increase the mouse pointer's acceleration.

Are you using Chrome? People are having problems with that browser. Firefox and IE seem to be okay though. If nothing else try the Clients & Patches link in my siggie.

It's nothing to do with the browser if you already have it downloaded. Right click the file, go to properties, then permissions and set it to be executable. Often it is not set to this by default. If you can't download the file then do as the person above suggested, I am just under the impression you already downloaded the .msi and can't open it with Wine.

Now that I have returned to Ragnarok I have a huge issue aside from the lag. When I activate mouse freedom by doing the Diniput in Wine Config it makes the game open in full screen and overides both my special mouse freedom settings AND the actual Ragnarok config settings. Did Ragnarok do something lately that made Mouse Freedom freak out? I had a great set up before but now that set up no longer works after coming back after a few months. And to Axylus, from before the Visual C++ is for windows, wine acts like windows and requires the same files to run Ragnarok as a normal Windows computer would. Just for Linux, you have to install it where as Windows it is sometimes there by default.

It sounds like you're using ROExt, not Mouse Freedom. ROExt's default settings are obtrusive.

Try using my sensible ROExt configuration (download the file to your client folder). :)

That is exactly what I am using and now I see with the post wayyyy above you figured out what I just said about C++ so I apologize for pointing out the now obvious xD. Sadly even with switching out the settings with yours it still opens in Full Screen mode. I'm redownloading the .msi from an obscure source (the wiki and WarpPortal downloads do not work, at least for me) and trying to reinstall it and patch it and see if it is just a random glitch because before my ROext worked nice and helped reduce a bit of the lag. Since I am on a Netbook it will lag regardless but nice to take away as much of it as I can. I'll see after I reinstall if it works right.

Hopefully what I just mentioned helps the girl out. Setting the .msi to be executable should make it run perfectly if she has in fact downloaded it. If not these sites have clients that work for me so they are what I use to install and just have to wait longer for patching

Edit: Reinstall did the trick, now I just have another issue, game crashes when I bring up emotes >_> Guess Ill file a ticket just to not get helped

What is the file name of the installer you used?

Does the crash occur while using the Renewal client, Classic client, or either?

Which version of Wine are you using? (Execute wine --version.)

Which Linux distribution are you using?

I used to the first link I posted of those two so the filename is iRO0312FullClient.exe to install.
I use Renewal, wine version 1.4, and Ubuntu 12.04. The crash occurs with the game and not wine and everything else works perfect. I don't really use emotes so its not a huge deal. Just not sure if more than me are having it. Gave me an error code last night but now it just kicks me off entirely without even a code.

The crash could be a result of using such an old installer. I installed the client on Ubuntu using the official installer without any problems, and I can also download the latest official and iRO Wiki installers, using Safari on Mac OS X, without any problems.

Are any error messages presented when you attempt to download the installer from the official web site?

Always xD. The downloader has been interrupted when trying to get it from the site every time since I started playing Ragnarok. I've used that installer, just this time when reinstalling I cant open emotes. I would reinstall again but I'm too lazy to do it all over right away. I tried my other computer too and it can't download the official file. Firefox nor chrome work.

Resurrection time. I am new to Linux, yada yada...

Info
OS: Ubuntu 12.04 LTS
Wine: wine 1.4
I did the winetricks vcrun6 vcrun2008 command

When I open the client patcher, it runs fine and updates.
However once I click start I get an error
Error:
Cannot find File: sprite *insert random characters here*
The top third of the ragnarok window is grey/black/white with the rest of the screen black.

Anyone know what is going on?

Roman

*EDIT*
does not matter for me now, I just coppied the gravity folder from my working windows OS and pasted it into the Wine programs folder. Works just fine. My guess would be that somehow something did not patch right when I installed it fresh.

You need to install the Visual C++ 2008 Run-Time Library. To do so, open your terminal emulator (Ubuntu's is named simply "Terminal"), enter "winetricks vcrun2008", and then complete the installation process normally.

The "vcrun6" sub-command installs version 6.0 of the Visual C++ Run-Time Library, which the IRO client no longer depends on. Roman was quoting an older version of my guide for installing the IRO client on Ubuntu Linux.

No, you don't need to run winetricks with sudo because it only requires access to the virtual Windows installation in the folder ~/.wine (where the tilde represents the path to your home folder).

No, you don't need to install DirectX because Wine's own implementation of DirectX is sufficient to run the RO client.

Just follow my guide and you should be fine.

I wrote some scripts for that purpose , the scripts need the "read & launch" permissons , you can open and see it , before use .
the script "POSIX_Configure"

Configure the iRO Client , and make a Desktop Folder called "iRO" with the Launchers. :=)

I fixed all troubles . i have

1 - The Updater Corrupting The Files of Game Client after Update
2 - The Window Positions Dont Saving
3 - All Options Reset to the First Run
4 - Resolution Not Saving
5 - The Classic RO , just Open a "Window Tittle" -> You Need Set The Resolution First
6 - The Game Dont Have Sound -> First Check in Options BGM & FX (Alt + O)
7 - The ClassicRO Updater Dont Start.

I that things i fixed with the help of user "Axylus" . thanks for all Info you gave me

another thing , please , i strongly reccommend use -> TeamSpeak3 , Native For Linux
And not Ventrilo trought Wine , with the "iRO Client"
Because , in some points in some distros , the game

1 - Dont have Sound in both software
2 - Or The Sound Corrupts in one of the two applications

3 - Sometimes show you like is 100% but its lie , because  when you speak
you dont transmit you audio , another players are not listen you.

I need some help. I've installed iRO today, following Axylus's instructions. Everything went fine, except that I can't run the game...

This is the error I get after the I click to open the game (this happens after it patches up and everything)

here's the error message I get:

SkinInfo_NEW.lua:219: attempt to call global `C_IsSteamOn' (a nil value)

ta0804.jpg

I think that it expects steam to be installed under wine too, but I've had no success installing steam w/ wine.

This is my system:

Ubuntu 13.04 ~ 64 bit

running wine-1.6

I have the native steam for ubuntu installed, but I get the same error when I try to open the game (with or w/o the native steam running).

Does anyone know what I could do to fix this?

@Inakuze, I would try your link, but you have ~ 20 100MB files -____-

if you used a cloud storage service like Dropbox or Copy, things would be much easier.

You could just drop the whole folder (no need to compress it) and share w/ everyone.

here I use both Dropbox and Copy. Sign up w/ Copy w/ my referral link so you and I will both get +5GBs (so you would start w/ 20GBs rather than 15GBs)

https://copy.com?r=jqz7ny -> copy free cloud storage referral link (signing up w/ this gives you 20GBs of free cloud storage)

The cause of this problem is a bug in a recent update that added Steam integration; it's not specific to running the RO client under Wine.

All you need to do to fix it is run the file in the client folder named Patchup.exe. (The client folder should be located somewhere inside ~/.wine.)

This worked like a charm Axylus! :D

Thanks for the help!

btw, I would add this note to your instructions on the top of the page

Hey Guys,

Returning RO player praying I can get it working on my 64 bit OpenSuse 12.3 installation. I have wine installed and vcrun2008.

I don't even get past the installation process, my windows knowledge is well... bad... I get the following error output to the CLI:-

fixme:storage:create_storagefile Storage share mode not implemented.
err:richedit:ReadStyleSheet skipping optional destination
err:richedit:ReadStyleSheet skipping optional destination

err:msi:ITERATE_Actions Execution halted, action L"InstallFiles" returned 1603
