I was bored this weekend and needed to learn a bit of C# programming so I made this app.

gem-utility-ss1.png

gem-utility-ss2.png

It's a utility that allows you to determine how many gems, chemicals, crystals, and hearts are required to craft any grade gem. All you do is select the gem type, the grade you want to make, and the grade you have to start off with (for example, make a D7 from D2s).

Feel free to try it out and provide me with feedback if you wish.

Thanks!

You might want to re-locate Text fields so they don't go over the drop down menus.

do you mean relocate the text fields so the drop down menus don't cover up the text fields? i realized they were getting covered up but only while making a selection.

thanks for the feedback!

Feedback:

Target Grade and Supply Grade, can't fully see all the text.
Also slightly covers the drop down boxes.

As calaaniwygen already suggested, Ideally relocate :waddle:

A typo for White and Gold Hearts :handshake:

Is it possible to increase the size of the fonts/text?
I'm personally having to difficulty reading the numbers and text.
Perhaps another font colour would be ideal instead of white.

Overall the program looks well made.
Keep up the good work :P

I think it's possible that, depending on your windows version and/or theme you are using the labels and font change their relative locations. If this is the case I don't have any other systems to test it on and I will require your feedback and a screenshot if possible.

Thanks again!

The current OS I use is Windows 7 Ultimate.

If you need more tests and feedback for it, I'm happy to help.

So far it's fine from what I can tell on my OS.

Main suggestions:
Try having a "Please Select" on the Gem Type Drop down menu instead of a blank box.
Some things have to be "Fool Proof"

Minor suggestions:.
The parts where "Crystal Required" and "Hearts Required" appears close to the "Red and White" text.
You could stick the pictures of the coloured crystals and hearts below their appropriate text boxes.
Also maybe a picture when selecting a gem the appropriate gem picture appears in a box.

Hope this feedback helps.

Thanks for the suggestions!!

- I like the idea of "Please Select" unfortunately a drop down box in C# does not allow text there (at least I couldn't figure out how to put it). What I can do is instead of having the program start out with the drop down box "empty" I will make it default to the first selected, Garnet.

- I will make the boxes Crystals Required and Hearts required bigger so they are not so close to the text.

- I will see about the pictures part... i thought about it before but i was too lazy to download the images of each item. :handshake:

Updates tonight after work. :waddle:

Thanks again!

- Gem select box now defaults to Garnet.
- Tab index only toggles between pulldown menus.
- Improved spacing between group box and labels.

Not sure if anyone really cares or if anyone is using my little utility but.... :waddle:

I updated it to now have a "Chemical Analysis" dialog which helps determine the types and amounts of chemicals for each type.

Thanks!!

Can I recommend you make the Gem List go by alphabetical order? Would make things a little teeny bit easier I think.

Thanks for the suggestion!

I will make it an option. :)

If I remember correctly I based the order on the order they show up in the crafting window.

I might be able to do it later today but right now I am going to take a nap. :P

Is there any way to lower the amount of memory being used? With the program open it is usually around 7K, which isn't a lot, but seeing as how I push my PC to the limits almost constantly, it would be nice.

The program has been compiled in "Release" mode (for those of you who don't know what this means it basically means that 'extra' debugging information is not included in the binary). Essentially this means that the footprint of the program is as small as I can make it without actually going into the code and finding subtle places to improve memory usage. This, frankly, is not worth the effort.

For any software application one critical thing to watch for are what's called "memory leaks." A memory leak causes a programs footprint (memory usage) to grow over time.

Does the memory used stay fairly constant or does it seem to grow without bounds? If it does grow, that would definately mean I need to re-evaluate my coding.
