Unfortunately, the news that all cRO servers will be closed on Dec. 31st has been posted on the official website.

http://ro.sdo.com/we...CategoryID=1002

all data will be eliminated...so far, nobody knows whether there are some agents willing to take over this game in Mainland China...

would be so appreciated if someone can give me some information about how Gravity is going to do next, or any agent is willing to take over the game...

no one wants to wait for her death

and i heard that they try to register into iRO and having problem with it, i hope somehow iRO will let them join us or maybe have their datas transfer to us anyhow =(

...Interesting how they picked their words in the announcements.

"Ragnarok Online will leave everyone for a while" is a part of their announcement.

Taiwan RO has the licences of Taiwan, Hongkong and Macau. Their language is Traditional Chinese.
I don't think that any other server besides TaiRO will take the cRO Accounts...

It's sad though, and I feel with the chinese players and hope they'll find a good, new home.

I don't know about twRO... Last time I made an account there (which was a long long time ago), you're required to provide your personal ID/passport number, something that wasn't needed when I register for a cRO account. If they're still using that system I'm not sure how well they'd go about applying that to cRO users. =\

One thing I don't like in MMO is that english-illiterate starts populating and next thing you know, it's hard to find anyone speaking english at all.

Now, I am very surprised this is happening to cRO first.
I've been there for a couple of months and the biggest differences are:
1. They have 0 bots
2. Their "Drop a certain item card/skills" have unnerfed drop rates that even normal players can enjoy(Lots of smith farming via Ore Discovery in ant hell)
3. They do NOT of any skills blocked on certain maps, their SCs get to Manhhole in dungeons, their Warg Bite works in ET

They do have certain items' drop rates nerfed on the free server, but it was still acceptable IMO. It seems to me that, cRO just has quite a few things we players from iRO only dreamed of, but they are closing down. On a side note, this isn't the first time cRO closed. I believe the first time when it was run by Gameflier, they closed it because of the bot issue(correct me if I'm wong) getting out of hand. And SD, the company running cRO currently, took over and they really got rid of bots. For those who are worried about the players from cRO's inability to speak English, you are worrying over nothing. There's TaiwanRO(They seem to have bots problems too, not as serious as iRO) that they'll most likely move to, but most importantly Chinese is a character language that is not recognized by the iRO client.

It is very hard on the players that there is a guild proposing to do guild war in real life vs SDO (company that closing down cRO).

edit, didn't know this forum don't support chinese character either.

How common is it for an MMMO to keep losing servers. Wasn't there a thread about the European server closing where they showed the vid of everyone gathering for the last few minutes? Is there something so fundamentally wrong with this game that it is dying?

No.

Servers open and close all the time.

There was an Australian server once. That one closed many years ago (at least I think ORO was Australian, correct me if I'm wrong please).

There's also an Arabic server that just opened fairly recently and is doing very well.

It isn't the game, it's that it's often hard for some of the smaller servers to get their licenses renewed by the parent company. The regional servers often want to do things the parent company isn't terribly fond of, or they just aren't making enough profits for the parent company to allow them to renew the license. Just because the server is closing doesn't necessarily mean they "failed", there are a lot of factors to look at.

A lack of profits would mean there's something wrong with the game. Which I would guess is why many servers close.

The regional server may be doing fine when you look at the cost to run it, but to the parent company it isn't always enough. There's a large disconnect between the two.

Even if there's nothing blocking foreign language characters, with the current Arial font the Chinese characters will show up as mojibake in-game. (You saw the episode 13.3 Sapha NPCs speaking in mojibake if you don't have the interpreter ring equipped?)

That's not really the point here.
There are simply servers that have such a small license area that there are not enough player in this part of the world, not speaking of many players from this area may have started on another server years ago and don't move to the new one.
Than there are servers who're just "kicked out" by Gravity to begin with.

Regarding the european server:
Gravity founded "Gravity Europe" somewhat during the years and took away the france license from euRO to open fRO.
Than Gravity Europe got all european licenses that weren't allready taken over by euRO, meaning all licenses except germany, austria, switzerland, italy and turkey. So the license holder of euRO, Burda:IC, was cut out slowly. They couldn't afford to make big convention presentations for example because they weren't allowed to use it in other countries as well - for a game hoster who also hosts other european games and goes to conventions all over europe, this was a nail to the grave for euRO getting new players at all.
I guess they tried to connect RO with their other games, too, but korea didn't gave their approval. They didn't supplied any more updates, or fullfilled requests like bug fixes (!) that were years old. euRO wasn't allowed to do these things on their own, like iRO is, too. So they hanged in a rope here. After they couldn't get anything done for over a year - they gave up. They didn't saw a chance to keep up their standarts of quality and decided to not renew the lincens. I could think that something similiar happened to cRO too.

Btw, Burda is doing fine now, airing lots of advertisment for their other games in television now. So... yeah, they surely planned more for RO as well, but couldn't do it.

Now the last european licenses are owned by Gravity Europe as well.

Renewal may have been the deathblow.

RO cannot survive on WoE alone. There needs to be functional PvM party play. We have some because our GMs went out of their way to demand earlier access to quest content, an at least slightly better xp share system, and most importantly, the TI events. I don't think any other version did any of the above. It's not a ton of content, but it's enough that the less pvp-oriented players are still here in at least some regard, and putting at least *some* money into the game.

If our GMs are able to get the meaningful balance they're pushing for (it's going to be one hell of an uphill battle vs. the apathetic kRO team, but they're clearly trying), they can then make the rest of the elite dungeons like Overlook for challenging play, and we'll thrive again.

That's us, though. No other version is doing this kind of stuff.

yep. Australia/New Zealand (the 'O' was for Oceania) - oRO died due to chronic bad management and horrible business decisions. We could see the end coming for some time, and the player base/community made some sensible and simple suggestions to the management about how to fix things that were completely ignored. Luckily we were offered the transfers to iRO and the rest is history.

I'm serious about the langauge barriers problems with MMO. Even if their language has no unicode in our version, they can still do something similar to Japanese -> Romaji.

You're not entirely welcome in other versions if you can't speak/type/read their language. You can't exactly request help from eachother without some kind of mess up or misunderstanding something along the line.

You can be the nicest Frenchman out there, but I doubt a Indian would want or even can associate with eachother.
