In general it's pretty much cut out the picture and then save it as a transparent supported image.
They tend to be .png format the most, followed by rare ones like .tiff and lesser quality such as .gif.

Personally it's not really my thing, due to the blandness.
But again, it's personal preference, due to myself using Photoshop to brush a lot on my signatures.
However in a general point of view, it's good because it's clean.
From an artistic point of view, the old quote goes "Less is More"
