Does anybody know if bosses bypass Ice Wall regularly, or just with specific skills?

I never had a reason to use Ice Wall against a boss before Baphomet and he killed me while I was walled, which is why I'm wondering. Bapho targeted his single-hit tracking AoE on me, so I thought I'd be a smart Wizard by running away from the party and Ice Wall myself so nobody would take damage. Then while in Ice Wall the skill nailed me for 7k damage and I died. (I also died using Ice Wall against Jeiwatch before, but it was during the start-up animation, so I don't know if that was him bypassing it or just my being too slow.)

Most boss skills have a specific point of time where the skill is registered as a "hit", in the sense that the attack has been successfully executed on your character (and will now roll against dodge and parry, rather than "missing" you).
For example, take Gearbaz's blue aoe in PvE arena HM. This is what happens:
1.Gearbaz starts charging up. A big blue circle appears.
2.The blue circle disappears. Gearbaz starts his animation; he starts spinning and a white whirlwind appears. Running out of the AoE will not prevent you from taking damage. Similarly, running INTO the AoE will not cause you to take damage either.
3.The spinning animation/white whirlwind thing ends. The numerical damage appears on your character, and your hp is reduced.

For an effective ice wall, it has to be active at the point where the "hit" is registered on your character. So you have to pop ice wall before he starts spinning, not before the number on your head pops up.

Generally, for any aoe with a visual target (blue circle, red triangle/semicircle), you have to ice wall before said visual effect disappears in order to block the hit. Also, you will not take any damage from DoTs while Ice Wall is active.

This also applies for non-aoe boss attacks.

The trick is basically to get the feel of when an attack is registered on your character, rather than when the numbers will pop up.

Hmm, so it's all a matter of knowing the timing before-hand then. That explains it, thanks. Though I can't help but feel that's a rather awkward implementation of how skills work, but nothing to do about that.

Thanks for the explanation, I've been wondering that myself. I took icewall when i created my first mage, but I thought the skill was so buggy that i've been wondering why everyone else thinks it's a must have. So it's for all bosses, but you have to cast it early enough?

Yes, as long as the hit has not registered (the moment the animation changes) and you ice wall before then, you will be fine.
