Im new what to level as a soldier i feel worthless

Hey i just got back to the game after playing really long ago at the beta years,and as i can see most of the guides here are outdated so i would like some help.I just made a soldier and im kind of lost with all of those skills avilable.Meanwhile i just level the straightforward passives(im only lv 17 and i have been leveling only weapon mastery until now).The problem is i bearly can kill orange monsters and even against them i need to spam fruits.I skipped leveling double attack because i though it would be worthless later,was i sopouse to level it for easier leveling?I would like someone to give me a generall direction of where to go skill wise.(I plan to go for champion with spear/sword).

Also i know there is no set in stone stat build but what are the stats you would suggest for a first leveling char?Mean while i was going on STR and some DEX.

A decent build is CON = level, STR. Leave the DEX for later.

On the other hand, having an active skill can help you kill monsters effectively.

thanks for the suggestion.and yeah i just got to the 2 handed tree and grabed heavy attack my life are much easier now.

Also another question is it worthwhile to get the hp and hp recovery passives if plan to go champion?

Yeah, these passives are totally worth it and will make you naturally tankier than any other class.
